See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Anchors Landing, Lake Hickory, North Carolina Affordable Lakefront Living In Granite Falls

Posted: July 6th, 2021 by Admin

By Matt Lahtela

Lake Hickory Living

Affordable, Beautiful, Great Location, Discover Paradise at Anchors Landing

Do you want to pay lower prices for waterfront property? Do you want a prime location that isn’t far to drive, but still has gorgeous deep water with great boating, fishing and breathtaking views? Does being in a gated, secure waterfront community appeal to you?

Of course, all of the above appeal to you. And, whether you live in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton area, Charlotte, Huntersville or Asheville, Anchors Landing on Lake Hickory is just your kind of neighborhood.

“Anchors Landing is no further from Charlotte than the north shore of Lake Norman,” says Matt Lahtela, Director of Sales and Marketing for NClakefront.com Realty. “And, of course, at Lake Norman you have to contend with 1-77. If there’s an accident on Interstate 77, then it could take three hours or more to get home every night. That gets old.

“At Anchor’s Landing, traffic is the LEAST of our worries,” Lahtela says with a smile.

Lahtela points out that most local folks around Hickory have no further drive to Anchors Landing than a trip to the grocery store. For those in Charlotte and Asheville, it’s just a relaxing hour (or less!) away.

Yes, and there are other substantial advantages to Lake Hickory over most other recreational lakes. “Most of them, like Lake Norman, are so congested with boat traffic,” said Lahtela. “But Lake Hickory is a breath of fresh air … beautiful, tranquil, relaxing by comparison. And, the prices, well, someone was telling me about some lots in gated communities on Lake Norman going for about three-quarters-of-a-million dollars!”

In addition the beauty of bountiful wildlife and hardwoods, Anchors Landing has an exquisite lakefront clubhouse, swimming pool, community boat slips and dry boat storage and nature trails. Most of the homesites are heavily wooded and an acre or more. The topography of the land is rolling with many homesites sitting up high with spectacular views for miles. Nature lots start at an unbelievable $49,900!

“What an excellent value for your money these days,” Lahtela says of Anchors Landing. “Certificates of deposit are earning such a low rate and the stock market has been on a scary downward spiral. Im reading all of these top financial magazines and newspapers … The Washington Post, USA Today, and they’re saying waterfront real estate is such a safe place for your money. And they’re not making any more waterfront property, you know!”

Lahtela says his buyers come from all over the United States even China and Korea. “The fact that it’s a gated neighborhood is especially attractive to women, for the security. And the nature trails are a huge draw; I’ve seen studies that say walking/nature trails are the top amenity requested in upscale communities today. I’ve seen so many people walking their dogs at sunset. It seems so peaceful and relaxing.”

Anchors Landing has over 25 acres of stocked interior lakes that also have spectacular views and are equipped with sparkling fountains. ”You get the water, the great views, trees, the peacefulness, everything without taking a chance that a motor boat or jet ski will wake you up at 6 a.m. in the morning,” says Lahtela.

Pristine Lake Hickory has 105 miles of shoreline. Lahtela says it’s the third lake in a chain of lakes created by the Catawba River. “That means it’s two lakes nearer the ‘source’ than Lake Norman, and it’s naturally cleaner. And, it fluctuates the least of any of the lakes in the chain. That’s a huge plus because some recreational lakes fluctuate as much as 20 or 30 feet.”

The swimming pool at Anchors Landing includes a Jacuzzi spa and the clubhouse has a full-service kitchen, fireplace and hardwood floors. “Purchase a homesite here and you get the whole community,” says Lahtela. “And the location of this place is just perfect-l0 minutes to a 350-bed hospital, a regional airport and only about an hour and a half to the Greensboro area. And, listen to this, in about 35 or 40 minutes, you can be at the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Blowing Rock and Boone!”

Lahtela says great loan packages are being offered right now, including those that have long-term, low-interest financing. Another great advantage to becoming a part of Anchors Landing is that you can purchase your homesite now and build later, when you’re ready. And, you can choose your own custom builder. Whether for retirement, permanent or vacation home, building when you’re ready gives you great flexibility. You can buy at today’s prices, yet build when you’re ready.

Transit strike affects 100,000 in Helsinki

Monday, March 6, 2006

In Helsinki, the Finnish trade union for bus and truck drivers has gone on strike on Sunday evening, mainly over the use of part-time labor. The strike is estimated to affect 100,000 people in the capital area, crowding the remaining transit system on Monday morning. The strike is halting almost half of all bus traffic in and around Helsinki, especially hurting travellers commuting from outlying cities Espoo and Vantaa, where over 60% of bus traffic will be stopped.

The strike also affects 4,000 of Finland’s 55,000 delivery trucks, as well as waste management in many areas. The strike is not affecting trains, trams or the underground, but heavy crowding is to be expected. Authorities are also warning of traffic jams during rush-hours as people use personal cars instead of public transportation.

5 Of The Best Guard Dogs

5 of the Best Guard Dogs

by

Hiltder

If you re planning to get a dog to help make sure your family and home are safe, then you want to pick out a breed that s known for their courage, loyalty and bravery. There are a few breeds to choose from and it can be a bit difficult. Below are the most common guard dog breeds to help you make up your mind.

German Shepherds

One of the ultimate breeds designed for protection and loyalty, German Shepherds have long been used as working dogs. Today, these dogs are used by the police and the military as a K9 unit, sniffing bombs and drugs out, saving people and working in the force. These dogs are intelligent, easy to train and are low maintenance. However, they are prone to degenerative myelopathy when they become older, so watch their diet and make sure they re getting a good amount of vitamin B.

Rottweiler

This dog has had a long history of aggression, but once you get to know this breed a bit better, you ll find out that they re actually fun loving and relaxed dogs. The Rottweiler has been around since the Roman Empire, used as labor and protection dogs by normal citizens and soldiers. It has a massive jaw and a bite stronger than pit bulls. This dog is easy to train but socializing them should be given heavy importance while they re still young.

Doberman Pinscher

This dog basically looks like a taller, slimmer version of a Rottweiler, but it actually comes from a very specific line of selective breeding from different types of European guard dogs. The Doberman Pinscher is one of the most intelligent dogs and are easily trained to restrain strangers but not do any serious damage to them. As puppies, their ears are usually clipped to become pointy and their tails are docked.

Caucasian Shepherd

A massive dog that will do a wonderful job watching over a big lawn or back yard, the Caucasian Shepherd looks more like a bear then a dog. Like most large dog breeds, these dogs are more prone to developing degenerative myelopathy. These dogs are also known for their slight harsh temper, but a well-trained Caucasian Shepherd will gladly take a bullet for you.

Argentinian Mastiff

This medium sized dog works well with kids since it has a high tolerance to pain. They resemble pit bulls but are usually white in color. They are protective of their territory so intruders and strangers may need to be watchful of this dog.

However, they are prone to

Billy West, voice of Ren and Stimpy, Futurama, on the rough start that shaped his life

Billy West, voice of Ren and Stimpy, Futurama, on the rough start that shaped his life

Ren and Stimpy. Bugs Bunny. Philip J. Fry and Professor Hubert Farnsworth on Futurama. Sparx. Bi-Polar Bear. Popeye the Sailor Man. Woody Woodpecker. You may not think you have ever heard Billy West, but chances are on a television program, a movie, a commercial, or as Howard Stern’s voice guru in the 1990’s, you have heard him. West’s talent for creating personalities by twisting his voice has made him one of a handful of voice actors—Hank Azaria and the late Mel Blanc come to mind—who have achieved celebrity for their talent. Indeed, West is one of the few voice actors who can impersonate Blanc in his prime, including characterizations of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and other characters from Warner Bros. cartoons.

What is the fulcrum in Mr. West’s life that led him to realize a talent to shape personalities with his voice, and how did the discovery of that gift shape him? Wikinews reporter David Shankbone found that like many great comedians, West faced more sour early in life than he did sweet. The sour came from a physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic father (“I could tell you the kind of night I was going to have from the sound of the key in the door or the way the car pulled up.”), to his own problems with drug and alcohol use (“There is a point that you can reach in your life where you don’t want to live, but you haven’t made the decision to die.”).

I’m telling you stuff that I never said to anybody…

If sin, suffering and redemption feel like the stages of an endless cycle of American existence, West’s own redemption from his brutalized childhood is what helped shape his gift. He performed little bits to cheer up his cowed mother, ravaged by the fact she could not stop her husband’s abuse of young West. “I was the whipping boy and she would just be reduced to tears a lot of times, and I would come in and say stuff, and I would put out little bits just to pull her out of it.”

But West has also enjoyed the sweet. His career blossomed as his talent for creating entire histories behind fictional characters and creatures simply by exploring nuance in his voice landed him at the top of his craft. You may never again be able to forget that behind the voice of your favorite character, there is often an extraordinary life.

Below is David Shankbone’s interview with renowned voice actor Billy West, who for the first time publicly talks about the horrors he faced in his childhood; his misguided search for answers in anger, drugs and alcohol; and the peace he has achieved as one of America’s most recognizable voice actors.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Posted: June 28th, 2021 by Admin

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

This exclusive interview features first-hand journalism by a Wikinews reporter. See the collaboration page for more details.
