Media round-up: April Fools’ Day 2008

Posted: December 2nd, 2021 by Admin

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Many media outlets traditionally deliberately spread hoaxes on April Fools’ Day, including notable quality sources such as National Geographic and Science.

The popular British tabloid The Sun wrote that French President Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo stretch surgery to make him taller than his wife, Italian artist and model Carla Bruni. The report claimed the 5 foot 5 inch leader would be made 5 inches taller in one year using a method by Israeli professor Ura Schmuck. The Sun noted that during his visit to Britain last week, Sarkozy had high-heel shoes while his wife wore a pair of flat pumps.

The Guardian on the other hand ran an article that suggested that Carla would head an initiative by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to bring more glamour, good taste and sophistication to the U.K. general population. This would involve collaboration with Marks & Spencer for high-street fashion and Jamie Oliver for meals and wine.

BBC News had real-looking footage of flying penguins fronted by documentary host Terry Jones, which were actually an advertisement for its new iPlayer.

Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Posted: November 30th, 2021 by Admin

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.

How To Activate And Stimulate People With Alzheimer’s Disease By Involving Them To Daily Activities

Posted: November 30th, 2021 by Admin

By Dick Harkes

How Can Activities Help People With Alzheimer’s Disease?

Everybody needs the feeling of belonging to the group, the family, the club and so on. This counts with no doubt even for people with Alzheimer’s Disease. By stimulating them and creating the possibilities to perform activities of daily living you can help them to retain that experience.

Some doctors are not talking about a

person

with a certain disease. Instead of that, they identify a patient with his or her condition. The risk for us is also to see the illness first and after that the person.

We advice you to keep this in mind and always think and act inspired by the thought of the

person

we are supporting and helping.

Another aspect to keep in mind is: maybe they are forgotten what you did together the day before. Don’t think that it is useless to do these things together. The joyful experience itself for your beloved-one at that moment should be enough to motivate you to go on with these activities. They live in the day and time and you give them the happiness for that moment.

The Benefits of Activities

By carrying out activities they keep on feeling useful in life. Just the simple household tasks can give them a feeling of satisfaction.

You can also play a board game or other games together. Maybe you know a place for Occupational Therapy for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease.

The main goal of activities of daily living is to improve your loved one’s quality of life.

Don’t expect that is will slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease, but they can help maintain motor skills that aid daily tasks.

Activities of daily living also help relieve a caregiver’s frustration by keeping the loved one stimulated and by fostering emotional connection and self expression.

What to Take Into Account With Activities Of Daily Living

There are many things to take into account when performing activities of daily living. We mention a couple of them here.

Choose activities that are failure free.

The goal of the activities is to engage the person with dementia and encourage a sense of success. So don’t correct him or tell them they were more handy with it in the past.

KISS (Keep It Short and Simple).

They cannot concentrate for a long time. They also find it hard to make decisions. With choosing activities for your loved-one keep these in mind. They are also easily distracted. So avoid too many people and noises (like a playing radio set or TV).

Choose the right materials to manipulate.

When the dementia progresses you have to be aware of the situation small objects might be swallowed.

Safety first.

Keep the work area safe, uncluttered and well lighted and use unbreakable materials.

Routine is nice, but you can also try new things some times.

They like to do things they loved to do in the past. Sometimes trying out something new possibly arouses curiosity and can be of great fun for yourself too.

BBC to cut Electric Proms for financial reasons

The BBC have announced they are to axe annual music festival Electric Proms from their schedule for financial reasons. The festival first took place in October 2006. The 2011 event will not go ahead, with last year’s festival being the last.

Bob Shennan, controller of BBC Radio 2, said he was “disappointed” with the decision to cancel the festival. He said “In the current climate, we are faced with making difficult decisions, including how best to deliver high-quality live music programming throughout the year in light of continuing efficiency savings. I feel that Radio 2 can achieve the same impact of the Electric Proms in an alternative, more cost-effective way. I’m disappointed that the lifetime of Electric Proms has come to an end, but very proud of its fantastically rewarding run of creating new moments in music for the past five years.”

During the festival’s five year run it has featured performances from stars such as Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Shirley Bassey.

The decision to axe the festival comes at a time when the BBC are planning a 20% savings cut. Last week BBC director general Mark Thompson announced 650 job losses after dropping five languages from the BBC World Service.

Romania to adopt euro between 2012 and 2014

Romania to adopt euro between 2012 and 2014

Posted: November 30th, 2021 by Admin

Wednesday, April 13, 2005Mugur Is?rescu, the governor of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) predicted yesterday that Romania would adopt the euro sometime between 2012 and 2014, possibly joining the Exchange Rate Mechanism II as early as 2010.

In July 2004, Romania will revalue its currency, the leu, so that 10,000 old lei will equal 1 new leu, with 1 euro being equal to approximately 3.6 new lei. Dual pricing, in both the old leu and the new leu, has already been introduced from March 2005. The transition to the new leu is expected to stabilise the Romanian currency and prepare the country for euro adoption.

After Is?rescu’s declaration, many people commented that they were surprised by how late the target date for euro adoption had been set, being 7-9 years away. However, Is?rescu responded by stating that the new Central European members of the European Union, which joined in 2004, have not yet joined the euro, and that countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary are only expected to adopt the currency between 2008-2010, 4-6 years after accession. In Romania’s case, the adoption will take place 5–7 years after accession in 2007.

Students in Rhode Island school attacked by wasps

Monday, September 21, 2009

Dozens of students and teachers were stung by yellow jacket wasps Monday at a middle school in Cranston. The attack occurred around 10:45 a.m., according to Ray Votto, the chief operating officer for Cranston Public Schools.

It is suspected that during a routine fire drill, students exiting the building disturbed the wasps’ nest in a field behind the school. Votto said, “When kids exited towards the back of the school building near our portable classrooms, they walked into a field and may have disrupted a nest”.

The Cranston Fire Department and school nurses responded to the scene to provide medical assistance. A total of 25 students, one of whom was hospitalized, and four teachers were stung, some multiple times. All of the students and one teacher were sent home.

BBC: Ethiopian famine aid ‘siphoned off’ to buy weapons according to rebels, report

BBC: Ethiopian famine aid ‘siphoned off’ to buy weapons according to rebels, report

Posted: November 28th, 2021 by Admin

Friday, March 5, 2010

An investigation by the BBC has revealed that millions of dollars in famine relief aid money, including the money raised from the charity supergroup Band Aid and the Live Aid concert held by Bob Geldof, was “siphoned off” by Ethiopian rebels to buy weapons. One rebel said that at least US$ 95 million (£63 million) from — Western governments and private charities — was diverted into rebel coffers.

This was also noted in a declassified Central Intelligence Agency assessment of the famine situation titled Ethiopia: Political and Security Impact of the Drought, in which the report states, “Some funds that insurgent organizations are raising for relief operations, as a result of increased world publicity, are almost certainly being diverted for military purposes.”

During the 1984–1985 famine, Ethiopia was fighting Eritrean and Tigray rebels in those two northern provinces, although Eritrea has since gained its independence. Since the countryside was out of the government’s control, aid was brought in from neighboring Sudan. Some aid came in the form of food, while other aid came as cash which would be used by the aid agencies to buy grain from Ethiopian farmers.

Rebels would disguise themselves as traders and merchants to get their hands on the currency. “I was given clothes to make me look like a Muslim merchant. This was a trick for the NGOs,” said Gebremedhin Araya, a senior member of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Some funds that insurgent organizations are raising for relief operations, as a result of increased world publicity, are almost certainly being diverted for military purposes.

One such aid worker that brought the grain was Max Peberdy, who worked for the charity Christian Aid. Peberdy is seen in a photo with Araya buying grain.

Araya said that only some of the sacks were filled with grain; the rest were filled with sand. The transaction was overseen by a member of the Relief Society of Tigray (REST), the humanitarian wing of the TPLF. The money was then given to TPLF leaders, including chairman Meles Zenawi, who has been Prime Minister of Ethiopia since 1991. Zenawi has not commented on the allegations.

Peberdy disputes the claims that he was duped, saying, “As far as we were concerned and as far as we were told by REST, the people we were dealing with were merchants.” He added, “It’s 25 years since this happened, and in the 25 years it’s the first time anybody has claimed such a thing.”

However, an exiled TPLF commander who lives in the Netherlands, Aregawi Berhe, is backing Araya’s story. He said the group got their hands on over US$100 million (£66 million) of which 95% went to buy weapons and build up a hardliner Marxist party inside the rebel movement. The remaining five percent would go to famine victims. Berhe told the BBC that the group would put on a “drama” to get the money. Berhe said, “The aid workers were fooled.”

In response to the allegations, the charity Christian Aid issued a statement saying, “There are allegations in the story which are against all of Christian Aid’s principles and our initial investigations do not correspond to the BBC’s version of events.”

I was given clothes to make me look like a Muslim merchant. This was a trick for the NGOs.

Nick Guttmann, who is director of emergency relief operations for the group, says the “story has to be put into context”. “We were working in a major conflict, there was a massive famine and people on all sides were suffering,” Guttmann said, adding, “Both the rebels and the government were using innocent civilians to further their own political ends.”

Bob Geldof, the Irish rock star who help organized Live Aid, said, “We are talking about a disgruntled, exiled general. The essence of the report also is not just about Live Aid. It’s that all monies going into Tigray — that would be Oxfam, Save the Children, UNICEF and Christian Aid — somehow, we were all duped and gulled. And that’s simply not the case. It just didn’t happen.”

Horse racing in NSW, Queensland cancelled indefinitely

Horse racing in NSW, Queensland cancelled indefinitely

Posted: November 26th, 2021 by Admin

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

Thoroughbred horse racing has been cancelled indefinitely in the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland due to an outbreak of Equine Influenza. An Australia-wide ban on the movement of horses, donkeys and mules which was due to expire on Wednesday has been extended until Friday. NSW and Queensland have extended their bans indefinitely.

So far the virus only appears to have infected horses in NSW and Queensland, with 51 confirmed cases and another 400 suspected. So far all those infected appear to be horses used for recreational purposes and not thoroughbred race horses.

Despite the bans on racing and horse movements, track work will recommence in NSW and Queensland today.

It had been feared yesterday that four race horses at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney had been struck down by the virus, but the horses later tested negative to the virus. If an outbreak were to occur at Randwick it could affect up to 700 race horses stabled there.

The outbreak comes at a bad time for the industry, as it prepares for the lucrative spring racing season in Sydney and Melbourne. The AUD$1 million Golden Rose event at Rosehill has been cancelled, although it is expected that Melbourne’s spring racing carnival will resume on Saturday as no cases of the flu have been seen in Victoria.

Racing Victoria has also said the Melbourne Cup will go ahead as planned despite the outbreak, even if no interstate or international horses can attend.

Despite fines of up to $44,000 and 12 months imprisonment in NSW there have been reports that more than 100 horse owners have been caught moving their horses. The NSW Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald, said it was “absolutely vital that no-one moves a horse in this state”.

“We will be working with police to ensure horses are at a standstill,” he said.

The racing bans have cost gaming companies Tabcorp and Tattersall’s millions, with Tabcorp losing $65 million in revenue on the weekend. Tabcorp expects to lose around $150 million in turnover this week. Tattersall’s has also said it expects to lose around $2 million in revenue per week due to the outbreak. Investors reacted to the news, slashing 3 percent of the price of Tattersall’s shares and over 4 percent of those of Tabcorp.

McDonald’s Franchise Review – The Facts

by

Gerek Allen

Owning a McDonald’s franchise can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life if you know what you’re doing, if you have the resources to qualify and if you do it the right way. However, before you do your share of serving billions and billions of hamburgers worldwide, there’s a few things you need to be aware of in order to make the right decision.

Today, there are roughly over 30,000 restaurants spanning the globe in over 100 countries. McDonald’s franchise has been in existence since 1955 and the franchise owners have played huge roles in the overall success of the company. When considering to buy a McDonald’s franchise, you have 2 options in which to do so. The first is to purchase an existing restaurant from the company or another franchise owner, which happens to be the most common practice. The second option is to purchase a brand new restaurant that is built from the ground up. In both cases, you must have a minimum of $300,000 down payment that can NOT be borrowed. You have to physically have it in liquid assets. Other important factors in buying a McDonald’s franchise include having significant business experience, good management skills, the ability to manage finances well, you must be able to execute and deliver on a business plan, you have to maintain exceptional customer service and you have to have a good credit history. If you can’t show you have all of these capabilities, then this franchise may not be a good fit for you. Most experts will tell you that breaking even in the first 7-10 years is doing a real good job of running your McDonald’s franchise. Part of the ongoing expenses include the traditional expenses like rent, utilities, inventory, wages and of course the 4% royalty fees that are based on gross revenues and not net profits. What’s interesting to know is that the McDonald’s corporation usually owns the land the franchises are on and the franchise owners pay their rent to the corporation. In fact, it can be argued that McDonald’s is actually in the business of real estate since they are one of the largest holders of real estate in the world. Bottom line is that owing a McDonald’s franchise is not for the timid. You have to have considerable net worth, a good track record and still get approval by the company. Not all franchises are this way and if you don’t qualify for a McDonald’s franchise, then there are plenty of other viable options for you.

For information on a franchise with NO royalties, NO territory restrictions, NO advertising fees, NO building or office required, NO credit check, NO analysis of your net worth & is 100% scalable, visit
