More than 50 programmers, scientists, students, hobbyists and fans of the A.L.I.C.E. chat robot gathered in Guildford, U.K. on Friday to celebrate the tenth birthday of the award winning A.I. On hand was the founder the Loebner Prize, an annual Turing Test, designed to pick out the world’s most human computer according to an experiment laid out by the famous British mathematician Alan Turing more then 50 years ago. Along with A.L.I.C.E.’s chief programmer Dr. Richard S. Wallace, two other Loebner prize winners, Robby Garner and this year’s winner, Rollo Carpenter, also gave presentations, as did other finalists.

The University of Surrey venue was chosen, according to Dr. Wallace, not only because it was outside the U.S. (A.L.I.C.E.’s birthday fell on the Thanksgiving Day weekend holiday there, so he expected few people would attend a conference in America), but also because of its recently erected statue of Alan Turing, who posed the famous A. I. experiment which inspired much of the work on bots like A.L.I.C.E. University of Surrey Digital World Research Centre organizers Lynn and David Hamill were pleased to host the event because it encourages multi-disciplinary interaction, and because of the Centre’s interest in interaction between humans and computers.File:ALICE Birthday Cake.jpg

Dr. Wallace gave a keynote address outlining the history of A.L.I.C.E. and AIML. Many people commented on the fact the he seemed to have moved around a lot in the last ten years, having lived in New York, Pennsylvania, San Francisco, Maine, Amsterdam and Philadelphia, while working on the Alicebot project. The A.L.I.C.E. and AIML software is popular among chat robot enthusiats primarily because of its distribution under the GNU free software license. One of Dr. Wallace’s PowerPoint slides asked the question, “How do you make money from free software?” His answer: memberships, subscriptions, books, directories, syndicated ads, consulting, teaching, and something called the Superbot.

Rollo Carpenter gave a fascinating presentation on his learning bot Jabberwacky, reading from several sample conversations wherein the bot seemed amazingly humanlike. Unlike the free A.L.I.C.E. software, Carpenter uses a proprietary learning approach so that the bot actually mimics the personality of each individual chatter. The more people who chat with Jabberwacky, the better it becomes at this kind of mimicry.

In another interesting presentation, Dr. Hamill related present-day research on chat robots to earlier work on dialog analysis in telephone conversations. Phone calls have many similarities to the one-on-one chats that bots encounter on the web and in IM. Dr. Hamill also related our social expectations of bots to social class structure and how servants were expected to behave in Victorian England. He cited the famous Microsoft paperclip as the most egregius example of a bot that violated all the rules of a good servant’s behavior.

Bots have advanced a long way since philanthropist Hugh Loebner launched his controversial contest 15 years ago. His Turing Test contest, which offers an award of $100,000 for the first program to pass an “audio-visual” version of the game, also awards a bronze medal and $2000 every year for the “most human computer” according to a panel of judges. Huma Shah of the University of Westminster presented examples of bots used by large corporations to help sell furniture, provide the latest information about automotive products, and help customers open bank accounts. Several companies in the U.S. and Europe offer customized bot personalities for corporate web sites.

Even though Turing’s Test remains controversial, this group of enthusiastic developers seems determined to carry on the tradition and try to develop more and more human like chat bots.Hugh Loebner is dedicated to carry on his contest for the rest of his life, in spite of his critics. He hopes that a large enough constituency of winners will exist to keep the competition going well beyond his own lifetime. Dr. Wallace says, “Nobody has gotten rich from chat robots yet, but that doesn’t stop people from trying. There is such a thing as ‘bot fever’. For some people who meet a bot for the first time, it can pass the Turing Test for them, and they get very excited.”

How To Lunge A Horse

Posted: January 19th, 2022 by Admin

How to Lunge a Horse in Preparation for a Rider

It is very important to warm a horse up on thelunge before mounting the rider ready for lungeing exercises.

Lunging the horse before mounting the riderwill allow the horse to warm up, provide an opportunity for you to check forany lameness (there is nothing more time consuming when lunging a horse thangetting the rider settled on the horse only to realise the horse is lame). Itis also important for the rider doing the lunging exercises to ensure the horseis not be fresh (excitable).

The horse needs to be lunged in walk, trot andcanter (even if the rider will not be cantering) by doing so you will make surethe horse will respond to your commands and be controllable in all three paces.

If you are going to use lunge rein when therider gets on then you need to warm the horse up with side reins, again this isfor safety reasons: to make sure the horse will work calmly with the side reinson, it is no good to test this theory out once you have a rider on the horse.

In regards to training of the horse, it isgood to lunge the horse in both directions (i.e. to work the muscle groups onboth sides of the horse evenly) however to lunge a horse in both directions ina thirty minute lesson is time consuming so unless the horse is particularlyfresh or if you expect lameness lunging through all three paces in onedirection should be adequate.

While you are lunging the horse ensure therider is waiting outside of the lunging area and are not hanging through orsitting on the fence. The reason for this is that if the rider is waitinginside the arena there is the risk that the horse may run over them or kick outat them as they go past. They may also become injured from hanging through orfalling off the fence. In addition it is not a good idea to have the riderstand in the middle with you while you lunge as it is easy to loose awarenessof where they are around you.

Safety Procedures for lunging horses inpreparation for a rider:

1.Ensure the gate to thearena is closed and direct the rider on an appropriate and safe place to waituntil you are finished.

2.They horse should besaddled and bridled (with or without a lunging cavesson and side reins). Attachthe lunge rein (if it is not already attached).

3.Secure the reins sothat if the horse puts it’s head down it will not become entangled in them. This can be done in a couple of ways

4.Unbuckle the reins, wrap them around the horses’ neck (around the gullet) then re-buckle themaround themselves

5.If the saddle has amonkey rein/grip (strap that is fixed across the pommel of the saddle) thereins can be unbuckled then re-buckled around the monkey grip then twist thereins around and pass the throatlatch through them to keep them up away fromthe horses’ legs.

6.Check the firmness ofthe girth.

7.Secure the stirrups sothey do not unravel and hit the horses’ elbows. This can be done in a couple ofways

a) left down the stirrups and lie them overthe seat of the saddle (this is quick & easy but they made flick back oncethe horse is in motion)

b) Leave the stirrup run up, take the loop ofthe stirrup leather and pass it under the top of the leather (it will now looparound the stirrup iron and under the top of the stirrup leather) then threadthe tail end of the stirrup leather through the loop of the stirrup leather andpush it back through the keeper on the saddle.

8.Attach the side reins.Outside first, then inside. (If you are going to lunge the horse on the leftrein (i.e. to the left) then you would attach the right side rein before theleft. (Alternatively the horse can be warmed up first without the side-reins thenwith the side-reins).

9.When you move thehorse off ensure the horse steps away from you and not you stepping backwardsaway from the horse. At no time when you are teaching or lunging should youwalk backwards.

10.Allow the horseadequate time to warm-up in each pace before moving onto the faster pace.

11.Give loud, clear voicecommands (i.e. “trot on” and “whoa”) followed by a flick ofthe lunge whip is the horse doesn’t respond. Encourage the horse to go forwardso that you know if the horse is going to react or be fresh in response.

12.While lunging thehorse, lunge whip and lunge rein should form a triangle with you at the pointof it. The lunge rein should never touch the ground and the lunge whip shouldbe directed towards the horses’ hocks when moving. Pressure on the lunge reincan be used to assist in encouraging the horse to slow down, if this doesn’twork decrease the size of the circle.

13.Once you have warmedthe horse up in walk, trot and canter return the horse to halt. This should bedone progressively through the paces and with the horse in control, not justmindlessly cantering around in circles.

14.At the halt remove theside reins while the rider mounts ready for horse riding exercises. To removethem you will detach the inside first, then the outside. Make sure they aresecured and not left to hang around the horses’ legs.

15.Recheck the girthbefore the rider mounts

When you are learning howto lunge a horse, if it is with a rider doing horse riding exercises or if youare lunging horses for the lunging exercises is to continue to be aware ofrisk. There are lots of other things that can go wrong but the main safetyareas are listed abovenbsp;&nRegular training of thefoal

As the foal becomesold enough, riding the foal

Training for firstcompetition

Competition plan forthe year

Plan for competing ata higher level

Plan for teamselection

And so on

The benefits ofsetting long term goals are greater motivation and higher levels of self-esteemand confidence.

Here are some simple steps to help define andrealise your goal.

1.Write down the goal

2.Give yourself atimeframe for achieving it

3.Describe what you needto do to achieve it

4.List any knowledge orskills that will be required to reach the goal

The preferred method for goal settingstrategies is the Map Method

Where do you want tobe?

Where are you now inrelation to it?

How are you going toget there?

Make a map and followit!

The S.W.O.T. analysiscan also benefit goal setting strategies, but is less effective than the MapMethod.

When you come up with an equine business idea, the main thing is that you can align your personal goals with your horsebusiness plans and that your horse business ideas are making you happy

Judges rule patrons may sue nude bars for lap-dance overcharges

Posted: January 19th, 2022 by Admin

Saturday, April 23, 2005

A three-judge Texas Court of Appeals ruling will allow men who were overcharged at nudie clubs to sue for refunds and damages.

The two plaintiffs, Paul Brian Meekey and Michael Fulmer, had their cases heard because they were charged more than a regular lap dance fee when they used a credit card, typically $25 for a $20 dance.

“Texas law is pretty clear that you cannot charge someone extra for using a credit card,” said Sandra Krider, an attorney for the patrons. “The fact that they are strip clubs shouldn’t mean they get away with it.”

A lawyer for the businesses, Rick’s Cabaret and the Men’s Club, argued a case based on the type of employment the ladies agreed to perform.

“Since the dancers are independent contractors and not employees of the club, the clubs are not the ones selling the dances,” said attorney Albert Van Huff.

But the men’s attorneys said the win could potentially become a class-action suit with many hundreds of men claiming their day in court. That could present a problem for other patrons who may not want their name and their use of a credit card at a nudie bar released in court transcripts.

“They are going to want the (strip) clubs’ credit card companies to give them the names of all the different people who have charged dances there,” said Van Huff.

The 14th Court of Appeals, a Texas court with headquarters in Houston, had reversed a ruling of a lower trial judge that this case should be heard before the state Finance Commission instead of in a judicial proceeding. The case was sent back to be tried again.

What Makes School Management Software Functional?

by

Jaydavis89

Every school wants its facilities to be advanced to an extent that all the processes get managed without much effort. Keeping this vision on high priority, schools are investing on software packages which can bridge gaps related to interaction between students and teachers. Moreover, it can be assessed that technological advancements have nowadays covered all the daily functions relevant in schools further integrating them in common software. This software assures perfect execution of planning with respect to a host of operations of school management. In the context of fee itself, there are multiple factors to be kept in mind prior to taking any concrete decision.

It is for sure that no institution could put its reputation at stake, thus, the pragmatic step to be taken by the management is to purchase school management software. Administration of schools at present is finding their work becoming easier with this software due to its efficient performance and glitch-free output. On the other hand, it is not just administration of the institution which has been included in the list of beneficiaries of this software. In fact, the front desk operations, staff management, library management and even inventory can easily be managed by this technologically advanced system. In case, you are planning to buy software package which serves your purpose of keeping a check on management aspects within school, then, following points are worth considering:

Fees of school students need to be properly managed: There are no doubts that with increase in the grade, the price structure also gets boosted. Hence, it is necessary to focus on fees management software, which further implicates that you need to buy software which primarily deals with the tasks related to management of fees.

Best software need not always be pricey: Most of the software packages of school management may claim that their products/services are costly because they offer lots of facilities. On a contrary, you should not always carried away by these marketing tactics, rather look for online school software that constitutes of result-oriented mechanism that too at cost-effective price.

User-friendly interface should always be looked for: If any school management software is made up of complicated aspects which demand technical acquaintance, then, this can be a serious limitation of the product. Bush deploys military in the US for active duty as federal response force

Posted: January 16th, 2022 by Admin

Sunday, October 12, 2008

United States President George W. Bush deployed the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team to a new role on United States soil last Wednesday, training for dealing with national crises. Critics claim that act of the Executive Branch violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits military participation in domestic matters.

In 2007, the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act was introduced; it overturned the Posse Comitatus Act by allowing the Commander in Chief to suppress ‘insurrection’ and ‘restore order’. When it was repealed in 2008, Bush stated that he did not respect the later repeal.

The combat team, renamed CCMRF (C-hemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosive C-onsequence M-anagement R-esponse F-orces), has been assigned for year-long duty and training at Fort Stewart to prepare them for “civil unrest and crowd control or to deal with potentially horrific scenarios” such as security or natural disasters. After a year, a new unit will take its place.

CCMRF will be under the control of the Northern Command (NORTHCOM), and now has the same legal authority as a unit deployed to Iraq under the direct control of the Executive Branch. The unit will have use of engineer and medical units, the Marine Corps Chemical, Biological Initial Reaction Force, and a Navy weather team, as well as members of the Defense Logistics Agency and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. A spokeswoman for NORTHCOM added that both wheeled and tank vehicles would be available for the CCMRF.

In July the unit was assigned a new commander, Col. Roger Cloutier. “If we go in,” he said proudly of the deployment, “we’re going in to help American citizens on American soil”. CCMRF will be training in both traffic and riot control equipment, and will be the first to use the Army’s new nonlethal package, which is intended for war-zone and not domestic use.

NORTHCOM’s September 30th statement includes a quote attributed to “future operations division chief” Colonel Michael Boatner saying, “This response force will not be called upon to help with law enforcement, civil disturbance or crowd control, but will be used to support lead agencies involved in saving lives, relieving suffering and meeting the needs of communities affected by weapons of mass destruction attacks, accidents or even natural disasters.”

The action has raised concerns for some citizens like journalist Naomi Wolf, an author critical of the Bush administration, who referred to the deployment as a ‘coup’ in a well-circulated viral video and issued Americans a call to action.

NORTHCOM is a joint command established post-9/11 to provide command and control for federal homeland defense efforts and coordinate defense support of civil authorities. When Hurricane Katrina damaged Mississippi and Louisiana, several active-duty units were pulled from various posts and mobilized to those areas, but were not assigned to NORTHCOM, but instead individual commands under provisional authorities.

Military officials have not yet responded to a request for comment.

Hong Kong’s recession ends, economy grows 3.3%

Friday, August 14, 2009

According to official records, Hong Kong’s economy has left a year-long recession, recording a growth of 3.3% in the second quarter ended in June. The figures, which were seasonally adjusted, were higher than forecast by economists.

As a result, the government has increased its growth predictions for 2009. Previous estimates suggested the economy would contract by 5.5% to 6.5%. Now, the contraction is only predicted to be between 3.5% and 4.5%.

“The GDP data was much better than we expected, partly because the exports were better and partly because of a pick-up in private consumption,” Bank of East Asia’s chief economist, Paul Tang, noted. “Private consumption is being driven up by stock market gains and by the property sector, which started doing well.”

However, government economist Helen Chan warned that “while we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel, […] the outlook remain highly uncertain because the situations in the United States and Europe are still very weak.”

From Acne Treatment To Treating Hyperhidrosis In Chevy Chase Md – A Spa Can Offer It All

Posted: January 13th, 2022 by Admin

byadmin

Spa treatments aren’t just for massages and soaking in a mud bath. Spas offer treatments for a variety of different things, and they cater to both men and women of virtually an age. Whether someone has more wrinkles than they would like, or they suffer from Hyperhidrosis in Chevy Chase MD, there are some spa treatments that can help.

Non-Invasive Procedures

One of the more popular options for spas today is offering procedures that are non-invasive. Botox injections are a good example of a non-invasive procedure. The botox is mixed by a doctor to ensure that it is properly done and then trained technicians inject it into the clients. This can be done in-between lunch and a massage, or it might be the only reason a person comes to the spa.

Another non-invasive procedure that can be found at a spa is laser fat removal. There are a number of systems that are used to achieve this, but essentially, light therapy is used to break down fat under the skin of the body to eliminate through waste. This is a great option for individuals with stubborn fat pockets that won’t go away through traditional means.

Skin Health

Skin health is another big reason that people visit spas. Many spas offer intensive acne treatment that not only helps to eliminate acne, but can also help reduce the appearance of acne scars.

There are also laser treatments that help to even out skin tone. People with rosacea, psoriasis and other skin conditions can get a laser treatment to either reduce or completely eliminate these conditions.

Hyperhidrosis in Chevy Chase MD can also be treated at a spa. This sweating condition is often treated by using botox in the sweat glands to reduce the amount of sweat they produce. This can be a big relief for men and women alike.

Spas have changed. If you’re interested in doing something for your skin, having a minor non-invasive procedure or you simply need a day of relaxation and rejuvenation, a spa is a good choice. Places like Tamjidi Skin Institute offer everything you might need to have the best spa experience possible.

BC man is selling the boat from old TV series Gilligan’s Island

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

A man named George Schultz in Parksville, British Columbia is selling the boat from old TV series Gilligan’s Island at the cost of $99,000. The cruiser, originally cost about $290,000 in the 1960s.

“There have been a couple of modifications, so it doesn’t look exactly like the original,” said Shultz, a boat broker who’s selling the 36-foot Wheeler Express Cruiser for fellow Parksdale resident Scotty Taylor. “But it’s still the original boat.”

Originally, the boat’s name was The Blue Jacket.

“Just for the show, for a stage name, it was called the S.S. Minnow,” Shultz said. The name was a reference to Newton Minnow, once chairman of the FCC.

“He just liked the boat, he wanted to restore it, it was a nice looking boat, a wooden boat, a classic and he likes classic boats,” said Shultz. “The hole in the hull was actually the least of the repairs – the interior needed a lot more work”.

Someone later stole the plaque on the boat, but the 46-year-old boat still has the round life preserver with S.S. Minnow emblazoned on it and the skipper’s chair.

Moon water possibly originated from comets, data shows

Posted: January 13th, 2022 by Admin

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Data from recent detailed analyses of samples collected on NASA Apollo moon missions, released Sunday, show that Lunar water may originate from comets that collided with the moon early in its geologic history.

A team of astrophysicists led by James Greenwood of Wesleyan University in Connecticut analyzed samples collected on the Apollo 11, 12, 14, and 17 missions and found that the chemical properties of traces of lunar water in these samples differ from water typical of Earth.

“The values of deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) that we measure in apatite in the Apollo rock samples”, Greenwood told Space.com, “is clearly distinguishable from water from the Earth, mitigating against this being some sort of contamination on Earth.” Greenwood and his team of researchers studied in particular the variations of hydrogen in the mineral apatite.

The newfound data show that the chemical properties of water in the apatite samples resemble data from the comets Hale-Bopp, Halley, and Hyakutake, suggesting that the water present on the moon could have originated from these comets or others.

According to Greenwood, the results of this study could also provide evidence as to the origin of water on Earth.
