Candidates make campaign stop at trade fairs ahead of 2008 Taiwan Presidential Election

Friday, November 9, 2007

Thursday, November 8, two trade shows, named MEDIPHAR Taipei at the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and Taipei Audio Video Fair at the TWTC and The Grand Hotel, opened in Taipei, Taiwan. Some politicians and government officials chose these events as an opportunity to promote their parties and campaign-coalitions ahead of the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

From the incumbent Pan-Green Coalition, President of the Republic of China Chen Shui-bian, Premier of Republic of China Chang Chun-hsiung, and spokesman for the Executive Yuan Jung-tai Cho visited the two shows successively and were innundated by Taiwanese media. President Chen avoided answering questions on the hot topic of commodities prices, addressing only those about the medical industry development, overseen by Sheng-mao Hou, Minister of Health.

From the Pan-Blue Coalition, 2008 vice-presidential candidate, and former Premier, Vincent Siew participated the opening of the Taipei Audio Video Fair at The Grand Hotel. He criticized on the economy policy and remarked: “The ruling party [DPP] doesn’t have a good track record, and some industries weren’t be supported in timely manner so that they lost some opportunities. I sincerely hope the government can appropriately assist the audio and video industries in marketing good brands and products to the world.”

Also, current Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Shih-chien was invited to give a violin performance and sing a Taiwanese song. The events at the Taipei World Trade Center proved to be quite a platform for the candidates running in the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

A Special Education Success Story With Add And Adhd}

Posted: February 20th, 2022 by Admin

Submitted by: Claudia Mann

The Problem

In our rapidly moving culture, special education students, diagnosed with ADD or ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are an ever-increasing challenge for teachers. Having taught in some capacity for nearly 40 years and being a parent of an active little boy, I have studied these conditions with immediate personal interest.

Holding Their Attention

Early in my work with the attentionally challenged, I observed that if the learning activity were engaging enough, many of these students could hold attention for long periods. Special Education students diagnosed with ADD or ADHD often have the ability to attend for long periods working with computers or video games. I wondered, could the problem lie more in the pace of the learning activity?

Give Them What They Need

Subsequently, I began to provide activities in my classroom that had some of the same qualities of the immediate response achieved in those computerized attention-holders. One of the most successful of these was the excavation of fossils.

The Setup

Fossil excavation was a 6-week class – more of a club, really in which students excavated a real fossil fish from a soft rock matrix. This time the class was made up of many special education students with various learning challenges, especially ADHD. The outcome of the class was remarkable.

Getting Their Interest and Attention

We started with a sort of guessing game involving fossils hidden in velvet bags and moved quickly into individual excavation of the fossils. Within minutes, my work was done; the students worked independently for the remainder of the two-hour class. My hardest work that day was to enforce clean-up-the students simply didnt t want to stop working.

Tools And Supplies

The only tools needed for this activity were small screw drivers-the sort that are available from any hardware store in a set of increasing sizes beginning with an eye-glass tool . I also provided magnifiers of varying types. The most sought after were the dissecting microscopes, which gave the individual the best view of the fragile fossil. However, much of the work could be easily accomplished using the naked eye or a magnifier in a stand, just to leave the hands free.

And Then There Are the Behavioral Challenges

I was presented with a new challenge about halfway into the second class: a behaviorally disruptive student who had been removed from another class. I did what I could to introduce him to our work and bring him up to speed. His initial work was little more than digging a hole through his rock, paying little attention to the fossil it contained.

Success!

Then a wonderful thing happened. Another boy, a challenging special education student who generally had little academic success, began to teach. You see, this boy was enthralled with digging out the fossil and he was having incredible success. He single-handedly took over and my work was done.

British man involved in deal to drill for oil in Darfur

British man involved in deal to drill for oil in Darfur

Posted: February 20th, 2022 by Admin

Friday, June 10, 2005

The British TV station Channel 4 has discovered that the Sudanese government has signed a deal for a contract to drill for oil in southern Sudan, and that the key man in securing the deal is British.

Friedhelm Eronat, who until two years ago was an American citizen, secured the largest stake made in a consortium that won the drilling contract in 2003. Oil was discovered in April of this year.

Geologists have long suspected the presence of oil in the south of the Sudan. Clivenden Sudan, which Eronat personally owned in 2003, had a high level of expertise in the country’s geology.

The twenty five year deal secured by Clivenden Sudan will see it pay the Sudanese government $8m in the event oil is produced. The government will also receive 70% of the profits from the oil.

In a statement to Channel 4 News, Eronat said that he is not a shareholder or officer of Cliveden Sudan, that he does not work for or financially benefit from Cliveden Sudan, and that Cliveden Sudan is not the operator of the concession, only a shareholder.

Cliveden Sudan itself said “there has been no commercial oil find in Block C [the area being explored for oil].”

Villages in Darfur 180km from the Clivenden Sudan wells have been attacked by Sudanese troops and aircraft.

Eronat became involved in the deal through Lebanese businessman Eli Calil, who has been accused of funding a failed coup in Equatorial Guinea last year (allegations denied by Calil). Calil and Eronat live near each other in the London suburb of Chelsea.

At least one rebel group in Darfur is certain the search for oil will inflame the conflict in Darfur. The Justice and Equality Movement wants exploration to stop until peace is established.

A member of the JEM, Ahmad Hussein, told Channel 4 News: “So when they say they discover oil in Darfur, who is going to benefit from that? Are they the people of Darfur? Of course not. Absolutely not, the only beneficiaries is the ruling elite and ruling minority of the regime.”

Eronat changed his nationality from American to British in October 2003, shortly before the deal was signed. Under US law, he could have faced up to ten years imprisonment and/or fines of $500,000, due to US sanctions on Sudan.

The UK government has been at the forefront of efforts to try and halt the crisis, with international development minister Hilary Benn making a statement to the house of commons yesterday after a visit to the region. He said: “I visited the Kalma camp in South Darfur and the El Meshtel and Abu Shouk camps in North Darfur where tens of thousands of people are facing a precarious existence. I spoke to men and women whose homes have been destroyed, villages burned, and whose communities have been the victims of killings, looting and rape.

“We are in a race against time in Darfur, and the UK remains committed to doing all that it can to help those affected and to work for a just and lasting peace for its people.”

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Posted: February 20th, 2022 by Admin

Saturday, April 17, 2010

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

The Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike 5 Ways Superior

Posted: February 18th, 2022 by Admin

By Alan Bullington

A Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike sits right beside the computer table where I spend my days. It’s ready to go whenever I am. And it’s been close by for almost twenty years. No maintenance for all these years and the convenience of exercise at home makes it one of my best deals ever. If there is such a thing as a classic in exercise machines, this must be it.

Here’s why it’s a favorite exercise machine since the 1970’s…

1. Dual action.

Getting in shape means more than just burning calories. Losing weight too is about more than just calories. The real key to long-term weight loss is increased metabolism. Your body will burn more calories as you build muscle and strength. That’s where dual action machine excel since you’re exercising just about every muscle as you pump and pedal. Not just that, the muscles worked by exercise bikes are the major muscle groups. That means the results you get are much faster that the results from just working the smaller muscle groups.

Ride a bike and burn more fat even when you rest…

2. Rugged.

And you really can pump and pedal since these bikes are both heavy and built to take the punishment. Ride as hard as you like and you’ll not damage this thins. It’s stable too so there’s very little swaying or rocking going on as you ride. Movement within the frame of an exercise machine is the early death of many a lesser stationary bicycle. Made to be easy to move, the Airdyne stills weighs enough to be a really solid platform for hard work.

3. Simple.

No complicated drives or fancy computers. Now electronics can offer great features for fighting boredom. That’s missing on the Airdynes. But then again, there’s no worry with failing computers and motors either. It’s just simple, tough mechanics and a basic design that’s built to last. That adds to less expected maintenance costs over the year and less frustration as well.

4. Trouble-free.

There really is very little to tear up. I’ve ridden the same bike for almost twenty years with zero maintenance, except for changing the timer batteries a few times. The worst problem I’ve had is a bit of corrosion on the lower part of the bike from all the (ahem) sweat!!! What’s more there are few expensive potential problems as you can expect with electronics and computers.

5. Comfort.

You get a big wide seat that refuses to wear or tear and a comfortable riding position. It’s an upright and not recumbent but the arm exercising seems to add to the comfort and fight boredom at the same time. The stable base that eliminates swaying makes it a better ride too.

Schwinn Air dyne bikes last and last. They help you exercise all over and build fat burning muscle too. My bike has been real workhorse with no trouble in decades. It’s a winner as an exercise machine. Another updated version, the Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Comp is an updated version that has changes included to correct some weaknesses in the original version.

As the Federal Labor Party calls for an inquiry into the outbreak of Equine Influenza, federal Opposition leader Kevin Rudd said “if there is a hole in the quarantine system, it needs to be plugged straight away.”

Federal Minister for Agriculture Mr McGauran has cautioned against a rushed judgment that failures at the Eastern Creek Quarantine station was the cause of the outbreak. But an unidentified former quarantine official believes its the most likely source.

Mounted Police patrols during the APEC meeting scheduled for Sydney next week have been canceled, as to plans to bring additional horses from interstate. Deputy Commissioner Andrew Scipione said “It won’t stop us being able to protect dignitaries, the public or police at any planned protest”

Organisers of the World Youth Day Papal mass plans of holding the event at Randwick Race course are also doubt. Vice President of the Randwick Trainers Association Mr O’Shea said of the current outbreak “We are going to take a massive financial hit now…”

“If we go through both World Youth Day and equine influenza that would be the death knell for training at Randwick,” Original plans for the Papal mass required 10 weeks where trainers would not be able to use the Randwick facilities, a revised plan which would use the venue for 3 days was suggested.

Mr O’Shea said the three-day plan was “totally unworkable” as it would require 24 days of disruption.

Australia’s largest wagering company Tabcorp Holdings LTD announced it has lost an estimated A$150 million after the cancellation of last weekends racing, this caused it share price to drop 4.6% on Monday.

A Tabcorp spokes person said “Based on its experience to date, if Australian racing (thoroughbred and harness) were not to resume until next weekend, Tabcorp expects that the loss in turnover will be in the order of A$150m” Further falls are likely with A$1.5 billion in Melbourne Cup and Spring carnival turnover under threat if the outbreak causes cancellation of races.

Tatersalls spokesman said it would have to run into months before it had an significant impact on their earning. Sportsbet said they stood to lose A$20m in turnover each weekend, with A$50m turnover at risk for the Melbourne Cup.

An independent study into the 2005 Melbourne Cup conclude it contribute A$318m into the Victorian economy. The racing industry has called on the Government to setup National disaster relief for the industry.

Peter V’Landy, Chief Executive of Racing New South Wales said “Jockeys can’t earn an income unless they’re riding. You’ve got stable hands, catering staff, totalisator staff and, you know, there are a lot of small businesses. I think this is a natural disaster for the racing industry. It’s a very big industry, it’s one of the top three in Australia, so we are, we are seeking now for financial assistance to these people so they can meet their financial commitment.”

Airbus launches world’s largest passenger plane

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

Toulouse, FRANCE — In a ceremony attended by several European political leaders and 5,000 VIP guests, Airbus unveiled plans for the A380, a twin-deck aircraft that can carry up to 840 people in all-economy class (550 for a Boeing 747), or 555 people in typical three mixed classes layout.

The new aircraft will take the world’s-largest title away from rival Boeing’s 747. Boeing’s upcoming new design, the 7e7, does not attempt to compete directly with the A380 but instead is aimed at a more efficient and comfortable flight at 200-250 seats.

Airbus chief executive Noel Forgeard stated that he expected sales of the aircraft to exceed the 250 required for the project to break even. To date, 149 confirmed orders for the aircraft have been received. Airbus has hopes that sales will exceed 700. The company is currently in talks with China regarding possible sales there.

The first test flight of the aircraft may take place as early as March, and the first commercial flight is expected to take off in mid-2006 from Singapore’s Changi Airport.

British and American airline Virgin Atlantic has purchased six of these aeroplanes and intend to fit them with gyms and bars as well as seats.

Three Romanian ports closed due to heavy fog

Monday, February 28, 2005

Bucharest, Romania — The Romanian Black Sea ports of Constan?a, Midia and Mangalia were closed on Saturday due to heavy fog. The Danube-Black Sea Canal was also caused due to reduced visibility. The canal, which runs for 64 km, is an important part of the European shipping channel that links the North Sea to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

The port closures left 54 ships in the harbour or stranded at sea, said Alexandru Mezei, the director of shipping navigation at Constan?a Port, the largest port in Romania. However, he claims that the closure was necessary to prevent accidents from occurring, as the fog had reduced visiblity below safe levels.

Esthetics College Program At Centennial College Is Cutting Edge

Esthetics College Program at Centennial College is Cutting Edge

by

Emma

When getting a relaxing and deep cleansing facial at a luxurious spa, we are focused on the atmosphere, the good feeling the spa offers and how wonderful our face will look once the facial is finished. We rarely think about the science behind the field of esthetics. However, the estheticians who perform facials (deep cleansing, exfoliation and massages), body waxing, body treatments, anti-aging procedures (Botox, laser treatments and deep chemical peels), skin care, manicures, pedicure, and more, are trained to understand the chemistry aspects of the field as well as the pampering and customer service ones. At Centennial College, students can participate in a two-year esthetics college program that prepares them to work in: spas, salons, health clinics, cruise ships, skin care companies and other such outlets. The industry, according to Melissa Durran, coordinator of the program, is a multi-billion dollar industry with many opportunities for both employment in one of the places mentioned or self-employment.

I think a lot of people have the impression that its just doing nails or getting facials but theres a lot of theory, theres a lot to know about the skin and the body, says Kayla Vanderoos of the Esthetician program. I didnt think Id have to do chemistry but we do. We have to learn about the ingredients and what different ingredients react to the skin. All that kind of stuff really surprises me. I think it would surprise a lot of people, too. What wont surprise people is the thorough job that Centennial Colleges program does with teaching students the skills they need to succeed in the field. Through a comprehensive curriculum students are trained in: anatomy, physiology, practical applications, product knowledge, sales techniques and business practice. Specific courses in which they participate include: Skin Care Theory, Skin Care Practices, Manicures and Pedicures, Spa Health and Safety, Waxing and Hair Removal, Product Chemistry and Advanced Experience, and more. Many of these courses include a lab component, which takes place in Centennial Colleges esthetician lab facilities and uses cutting-edge equipment that is common in todays wellness and medical spas. All courses within this esthetics college program are geared towards ensuring that students are job-ready upon graduation. This includes the incorporation of field placements in some of the best spas in the city of Toronto. During their field placements, students work with real customers (under the supervision of their instructors), applying what they have learned and gaining more preparation practice for the field. Please be advised, students must have completed a standard first aid and CPR (healthcare provider level) course, a vulnerable sector background police check, and an immunization review form before they can be sent out on the esthetician work placement. To apply for admission to this esthetics college

program, students must be able to present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. Also required is compulsory English 12C or U,or skills assessment, or equivalent.

Emma, who wrote this article, details the two-year

esthetics college

program at Centennial College, which prepares students to offer the full range of spa services.

North Korea withdraws from Tokyo Olympics, citing COVID-19 concerns

North Korea withdraws from Tokyo Olympics, citing COVID-19 concerns

Posted: February 13th, 2022 by Admin

Correction — January 13, 2022 The article states that North Korea boycotted the 1988 Summer Games in Los Angeles. This is incorrect, the 1988 Summer Games took place in Seoul. North Korea did however boycott the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Friday, April 9, 2021

On Tuesday, North Korean government announced it would not participate in the delayed Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics “to protect players from the world public health crisis caused by COVID-19”, the Associated Press reported. It is North Korea’s first official withdrawal from Olympics since their boycott of the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea, CBS News reported.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, this is the first time North Korea withdrew from a major international sports event due to concerns of an infectious disease. Several athletes from multiple disciplines did not participate in the 2016 Summer Olympics over concerns of the Zika virus, but North Korea did.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in had hoped the two nations could field a joint team similar to its unified Korean Peninsula team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Al Jazeera reported.

While North Korea claims to have no cases of the coronavirus, professor of North Korean studies at Ewha Womans University Park Won Gon says it has shown “a coronavirus-related neurosis since it declared an emergency anti-virus system in January last year”, adding it was very unlikely the country would be able to procure enough vaccines for its population by July, when the 2020 Olympics are scheduled to take place.

In November, Daily NK reported North Korea had placed 81 thousand people, in quarantine excluding the soldiers in quarantine; and, by October 22, 32,011 people were placed in isolation. A source told Daily NK over 300 people had died in an isolation centre in Anju, South Pyongan.

Director of Asian Studies at Temple University, Japan Campus Jeff Kingston told CBS this decision was a “setback for diplomacy”. CBS also reported Seoul’s disappointment at the nation’s non-attendance, depriving South Korea a chance to discuss relations with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Recently, North Korea’s vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea and sister of Kim Jong-un Kim Yo Jong warned March 16 “[t]he peaceful spring days of three years ago are unlikely to return”, calling South Korean leaders as “all born with stupidity” and they “have become the dumb and deaf bereft of judgment”. The warning came after the United States and South Korea held joint military drills in March.

This also comes after North Korea tested two ballistic missile on March 24, described by former admiral of the Japanese fleet Yoji Koda as “just the beginning of North Korean fervour.”

North Korea participated in the boycotts of the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and 1988 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
