Interpol arrest Karachi fire suspect in Bangkok

Interpol on Friday evening arrested Abdul ‘Bhola’ Rehman in Bangkok, Thailand. Rehman, 46, is accused of starting a 2012 garment factory fire in Karachi, Pakistan that killed over 250.

Initially thought to be accidental, the fire is now believed to have been set deliberately by an extortion group targeting the factory’s owners. Rehman is accused of receiving an order to start the fire. He is expected to be extradited to Pakistan where he is facing charges under terrorism legislation.

The Pakistani Interior Ministry was ordered by a court to arrest Rehman and another suspect, Hammad Siddiqui, with assistance from Interpol. A third accused, Zubair alias Lala, is detained in Pakistan. Around a dozen further suspects are under investigation.

The Ali Enterprises factory fire in Karachi’s Baldia Town area was among the worst industrial disasters in Pakistan. A judicial enquiry found insufficient emergency exits, insufficient safety training, overcrowding due to bulky equipment, and insufficient regulatory oversight all contributed. German firm KIK, the facility’s main customer, paid compensation to victims.

Once facing now-abandoned murder charges, the factory’s owners are now being treated as witnesses. Papers lodged before Sindh High Court in February last year suggested an extortion plot. A reinvestigation commenced the following month, and earlier this year police confirmed they too believed an extortion gang to be responsible.

Rehman was arrested at the Royal Garden Home Hotel, where he was staying alone. He is alleged by some reporters to have connections with the Pakistani Pak Sarzameen Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement, something both organisations deny. He is also alleged to have worked for Karachi’s local government.

Rehman’s wife said he was innocent.

Two Solutions For Unusually Large Breasts

Two Solutions For Unusually Large Breasts

by

Allyson Quesada

Women that are seemingly blessed with naturally large breasts aren\’t as pleased about having them as the average person might think. In fact, the majority of women that have larger than normal chests would actually prefer to have very small breasts. Considering the fact that breast augmentation surgery is the number one performed plastic surgery procedure in the world, it might seem odd that women with big breasts would actually prefer having smaller breasts! The primary reason for preferring smaller breasts is one that is often overlooked by those caught up in the visual prominence of big breasts: naturally large breasts can be a physical and emotional burden to the women that have them.

It\’s a well known fact that large, firm breasts add to a woman\’s sex appeal. However, at what point do those breasts become more of a burden than a blessing? The answer to that is subjective; only the woman that must carry those breasts around all day can honestly answer that question.

At one point or another, everyone has had a sore back. Sometimes the pain is slight and other times the pain is simple unbearable to the point where the individual must lie on the floor and do nothing else. Women that have unusually large but natural breasts often experience similar neck and back pain – the excess weight that hangs from their chest puts enormous strain on their joints and muscles, and since their breasts are permanently attached to their body, the pain is chronic.

If you wonder what it\’s like to lug around giant breasts, try strapping a thirty pound weight to your chest and then go about your daily business. I\’ll wager you\’re exhausted within a few hours and you\’ve probably tweaked a muscle or two as an added bonus. Now imagine you\’ve got a petite female frame and you\’re lugging around all that weight – can you imagine the strain placed onto your twenty four hours a day?

That last paragraph is quite descriptive at explaining how jumbo breasts are the catalysts for chronic neck and back pain. If you take the same example of strapping a thirty pound weight to your chest but this time you attempt to play a game of soccer instead of just performing your normal daily chores, how difficult would it be for you to participate in the game? In all probability, you would not be able to participate at any level, let alone a competitive level. Large breasts dramatically inhibit a woman\’s ability to participate in athletic activities.

Have you ever been the target of stereotyping? Large breasted women are often unfairly ridiculed, teased, and sexually harassed by strangers, coworkers, and even members of their own family. Some women will ridicule and tease another woman simply because she has extra large breasts. Why would they do this? More than likely jealousy is the catalyst. It\’s completely unfair when people judge someone based entirely on their looks, especially when it\’s in regards to a woman having naturally large breasts because she did not ask for them – nature just gave them to her!

If a woman wants to reduce her breast size, she has two options available. The first option is the cheapest and by far the easiest to obtain: breast reduction pills. Before you start popping those over the counter pills, you should do your own research and find out what other women have to say about the pills. You should also visit your family doctor and get his or her opinion on the pills – he might be privy to information that you are not.

The second option is breast reduction surgery. The procedure is designed to dramatically shrink a woman\’s breast size and volume by excising excess fat and glandular tissue. However, the surgery isn\’t cheap and you\’ll have to go through the recovery process which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. A board certified breast reduction surgeon can provide you with the latest information regarding breast reduction surgery. Call one today and schedule an initial consultation to learn more about the surgery and its recovery process.

Militants kill at least 21 Algerian police in ambush

Local media stated on Thursday that at least 21 Algerian paramilitary police had been killed after an ambush on their convoy.

The convoy was en route to their barracks at Bordj Bou Arreridj, following an escort of Chinese construction workers to a nearby worksite, located southeast of Algeria’s capital of Algiers, when it was attacked late Wednesday.

Militants detonated no less than two roadside bombs to block the convoy, consisting of six vehicles. They then opened fire on the police before stealing their uniforms, weapons, and vehicles. The militants, as part of Al-Qaeda’s network, are referred to as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, (AQIM).

Newspaper reports indicated that 21 people had died, while a local official said 23 were killed and a further five had been hospitalized.

A large security operation has started in the area; however, the attack was not immediately confirmed by Algerian authorities.

The militants have been left over from a civil war begun in 1992 between the government and radical Islamists that has killed between 150,000 and 200,000 people. Violence has since diminished, but attacks on government forces still occur.

3 Bolts To Keep On Hand For All Basic Repairs

Posted: February 19th, 2020 by

Find Out More About:

byAlma Abell

Having a variety of different fasteners and tools around the house is a great way to be able to cut down on the cost of repairs. In many cases with just a few bolts and a few basic tools you can repair virtually anything. While you can spend a lot of money and buy those sample packs of fasteners, a better option is to just have on hand three different types of bolts. New York City hardware and fastener supply stores will have several different designs ofbolts, allowing you to decide which ones will best suit your repair needs.

Carriage Bolts

Carriage bots are very easy to spot and have a distinctive style. They are usually a larger bolt with a round head that is slightly convex in shape, giving the appearance of a slight dome when mounted flush with a surface. In addition the carriage bolt has a square section beneath the head and a space below that that is not treaded. The square part under the head locks the bolt in place when inserted into a round or a square hole. These bolts require a pre-drilled hole and will be kept in place using a nut. They are perfect for larger projects.

Lag Bolts

As a universal repair item it is essential to have a few different sizes of lag bolts. New York City hardware stores or specialty fastener stores may also call these lag screws. They are similar to the carriage bolt except the head is a hexagon and there is no additional square above the threads and below the head. There is still a short or longer smooth top of the shank of this bolt. The can be used for wood, metal or other materials depending on the thread.

Eye Bolts

This is a special type of bolt that New York City do-it-yourselfers will find comes in very handy. It has a flat end that is threaded to almost the top of the shank. However, instead of a head it curves round to form a full or almost full eye. The result is a bolt that is a natural for hanging any type of rope or chain either inside or outside. They can also be used to close gates, screen doors and anything else both inside and out.

Having different lengths and sizes of bolts, New York City handymen will tell you, is a good option for any homeowner. In addition you will need the correct sized nuts and washers to ensure everything is secured.

Defendant shoots Judge, three others at Atlanta courthouse

A defendant on trial for rape in Atlanta, Georgia reportedly stole a deputy sheriff’s handgun and used it to shoot the judge, court reporter, and two deputies Friday morning. Three people were killed and one was wounded.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Rowland W. Barnes has been confirmed dead along with the court reporter and one of the deputies. After the shootings, the suspect reportedly attempted to carjack several cars in a bid to escape. He attempted to carjack a green Honda Accord with license plate 6584-YN, from a newspaper reporter, but eventually fled by other means. The reporter in question, Don O’Briant from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was beaten by the suspect but was fortunate to receive only cuts to his face and a broken face from a fall.

The car was listed as being used by the suspect in public alerts across the area before it was realised that the car was in fact still in the garage of the courthouse.

The suspect has been identified as Brian Nichols, 34, who was facing a retrial for rape and kidnapping after the first trial ended with a hung jury. Police are desperately searching for Nichols, as he is considered armed and dangerous.

The suspect reportedly stole the handgun by overpowering a deputy sheriff while he was being taken into the courtroom by the deputy, said Assistant Police Chief Alan Dreher. He then shot and critically wounded the female deputy, went to the courtroom where his trial was due to take place, and held about a dozen people at bay there before killing the judge and court reporter. He later shot and killed another deputy outside.

The deputy from whom Nichols stole the handgun is now sedated and in critical condition after surgery and has a bruise in her brain, according to Jeffrey Salomone, an attending trauma surgeon at Grady Memorial Hospital. Although she was shot in the head, the bullet did not penetrate her skull, said Salomone.

Markets dragged down by credit crisis

Posted: February 18th, 2020 by

Friday, August 10, 2007

Global stock markets fell today, in a mass sell-off stemming from the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded late in the day after falling more than 250 points, ending the day down about 31 points. The UK’s FTSE-100 index fell 232.90 points to 6038.30, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 406.51 points to 16764.09.

Central banks across the world are injecting funds into their banking systems to add liquidity, fearing that many financial firms with subprime ties will be insolvent. Yesterday, the U.S. Federal Reserve transferred US$24 billion to temporary reserves, following the European Central Bank, which authorized a record €83.6 billion addition to its banks, its biggest cash infusion ever. On Friday, the Fed entered into a $38 billion repurchase agreement of mortgage-backed securities, easing stockholder worries. Also on Friday, the Bank of Japan injected ¥1 trillion into Japan’s financial system.

The Federal Reserve met this week, but decided to maintain its target rate of 5.25%, although on Friday the federal funds rate was hovering around 6%, indicating a drop in liquidity.

The volatile week began last Friday with Bear Stearns tumbling as a result from its complete loss of two major hedge funds worth more than $1.5 billion. The hedge funds had been dangerously exposed to the massive sub-prime mortgage failure, and the company announced it was unable to return any money to investors.

Washington Mutual, and Countrywide Financial, both very large U.S. home loan lenders, saw shares fall. Countrywide Financial made a statement this week, saying they will be forced to retain a greater proportion of mortgage. American Home Mortgage Investment Corp, another large lender, recently filed for bankruptcy. The U.S. housing market has been declining for more than two years after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates 17 times. Now, lenders are in a quagmire from millions of people who are unable to repay loans after taking adjustable rate mortgages, teaser rates, interest-only mortgages, or piggyback rates.

Jim Cramer, of CNBC’s Mad Money, remarked that as many as seven million people will lose their homes from bad mortgages. Last Friday, Cramer went on a tirade on CNBC’s Street Signs, saying that the “Fed was asleep” and called for them to lower rates immediately.

Asian and European markets have become increasingly entangled in the subprime mortgage crisis in the U.S. Deutsche Bank of Germany lost almost $3.5 billion in share value, forcing the government to organize a bail-out. France’s largest bank, BNP Paribas SA, halted withdrawals from three large investment funds which were crippled by sub-prime exposure.

British Gas to increase electricity, gas prices

British Gas to increase electricity, gas prices

Sunday, July 10, 2011

British-based utility company Centrica, which holds ownership of British Gas, has announced its intentions to increase the prices of domestic electricity and gas later this year. On August 18, 2011, the company plans to raise the costs of gas and electrical supplies by eighteen and sixteen per cent, respectively. According to The Guardian, nine million customers will be affected by these changes.

British price comparison website uSwitch has reported that the “[a]verage household bill for a dual fuel British Gas customer will now go up from £1,096 to £1,288”. Mike O’Connor, the chief executive officer of consumer organisation Consumer Focus, has claimed that the announcement “will send a shock wave across the country” and will place an increasing amount of difficulties “on stretched household budgets. Consumers […] rightly question whether prices are fair.”

Phil Bentley, a managing director for British Gas, has claimed that value increases like this are “an issue facing all energy suppliers”. A director for British Gas, named Ian Peters, has claimed that “a fair return” will be made after the changes occur.

In 2010, British Gas experienced its largest ever profit, making £742 million (US$1,192 million, €835 million). Meanwhile, Centrica achieved £2.4 billion (US$3.8 billion, €2.7 billion) in profits. Richard Lloyd from product sampling charity Which? criticised the decision to raise prices, calling the declaration “unwelcome but unsurprising” for British Gas consumers.

Previously in December 2010, British Gas increased the price of its gas by 6.9%, which equates to £43 (US$69, €48). At the same time, the company’s electricity prices were raised by 6.7%, or £28 (US$45, €32). On Friday, Chris Huhne, the secretary of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee, said that British electricity businesses must modify themselves so as to avoid “the cycle of fossil fuel addiction. Alternatives like renewables and nuclear power must be allowed to become the dominant component of our energy mix,” said Huhne.

This news comes to light as Scottish Power, a rival energy company to British Gas, announced last month their intentions to up the prices of their electricity and gas supplies by ten and nineteen per cent respectively.

Focus Group Research The Good, Bad And The Ugly

Posted: February 18th, 2020 by

Submitted by: Jim Brackin

While focus group research has many advantages, as with all research methods there are limitations. Even with the “right” participants, a perfect environment, and a trained moderator, the eventual success of focus group research in providing useful actionable, insights is fully dependent on the analysis method used to decipher the session. In the past this fell on the moderator to provide a report, which may often be a subjective opinion which lacks a statistical validity. Not surprisingly, as clients want strong, quantifiable results more objective and scientific methodology like linguistic analysis software are being used to provide a more detailed analysis of the group.

The moderator’s mission

Group interviewing involves interviewing a number of individuals at the same time, the emphasis being on questions and responses between the researcher and participants. The reason is obvious: qualitative research provides deep insight into behavioral and emotional responses that can only otherwise be captured using one-to-one in telephone interviews. The moderator’s task is to prompt discussion and let the group members know that it is okay to agree or disagree with others’ responses. Questions must be thoughtfully selected and phrased in advance to elicit maximum responses by all participants. Interviewers or moderators usually ask focus group participants to consider and answer questions, and then to make additional comments after listening to the responses of others (Patton, 1990).

How many people make a reliable focus group?

Researchers disagree about the proper number of participants for a successful focus group. The recommended number of individuals per group is usually six to ten (MacIntosh 1993), yet some researchers have used up to fifteen people (Goss & Leinbach 1996) or as few as four (Kitzinger 1995). Whatever the number chosen, the ground swell of opinion among marketers and researchers alike is that all is not well with focus groups.

A Slate Magazine article, “Lies, Damn Lies and Focus Groups?” challenged the efficacy and value of focus groups for informing product development and marketing. It highlighted the widely documented mismatch between what people say about products in focus groups, and how they actually behave when it comes to making purchases. The difference between the two costs companies millions in inappropriate product development and misguided advertising.

Yet the real concern is the increasing problem of the ‘Focus Groupie’. A term used to describe individuals who spend large amounts of their time contributing to focus groups. Moreover nothing is sacred for these part-time professional opinion givers. Yesterday they were early adopting mobile phone lovers, today cautious supporters of children’s rights, tomorrow who knows? The only thing they have in common is that “after a while the stories don’t seem like lies – it’s more like acting – also it’s quite fun to pretend to be someone you are not”

That is something that all researchers agrees needs to change, even though no one really knows how to change it.

Validity of the Findings

The participants may well be chosen to represent a specific target audience but, as a group of 10 or 12 people, the findings cannot, with any statistical validity, be projected onto the entire population. Focus groups are therefore limited in terms of their ability to generalise findings to a whole population, mainly for the reason that of the small numbers of people participating and the likelihood that the participants will not be a representative sample. Which is why it is important to choose the right analytical tools and look for statistically significant findings from quantitative research that supports the focus group findings.

Conclusion

Focus group research involves organised discussion with a selected group of individuals to gain data about their views and experiences of a topic and is a popular form of qualitative market research used by manufacturers, service providers, political parties, ad agencies, charitable organizations, attorneys, and most other industries to gather consumer input on wide varieties of projects. It is true that focus group research can help gain insights into peoples shared understandings of brands, products and services. The disadvantage is that they can provide insights that are not reflected by a wider audience or the findings can be misinterpreted by subjective reporting.

Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

Posted: February 17th, 2020 by

Friday, December 14, 2007

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic condition causing benign tumors (neurofibromas) to grow along certain types of nerves and, in addition, it can affect the development of bones or skin. There are several variants of the disease but type 1 and type 2 NF account for the vast majority of cases.

The disease manifestations can vary from very mild to severe. Major symptoms include growths on and under the skin; skin pigmentations called café au lait spots in type 1; acoustic nerve tumors and consequent hearing loss in type 2. Growths can affect nearly all parts of the body, and pressure on nearby structures can cause a wide variety of complications. There is a small risk that the tumors transform into malignant cancerous lesions.

NF is one of the most common single-gene human diseases; around 1 in 2,500-4,000 live births are affected by NF-1, whereas NF-2 occurs in about 1 in 50,000-120,000. Both type 1 and 2 are autosomal dominant conditions, meaning that only one copy of the mutated gene need be inherited to pass the disorder. A child of a parent with neurofibromatosis and an unaffected parent will have a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder. The gene responsible for NF-1 and possibly NF-2 is thought to function as a tumor suppressor gene.

In most cases of neurofibromatosis 1, patients can live normal and productive lives. In about 25-40% of patients there is an associated learning disability with or without ADHD. In some cases of neurofibromatosis 2, the damage to nearby vital structures, such as the cranial nerves and the brainstem, can be life-threatening. When tumors are causing pain or disfiguration, surgery is thus far the only proven beneficial treatment option.

Reggie Bibbs is a 43-year-old-man living in Houston, Texas. Mr Bibbs was born with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis (NF), which causes him to develop tumors on his body (see infobox on the right). NF can be a subtle disease, but in Bibbs’ case it has left him with a disfigured face and deformed leg. But he is happy with the way he looks, and doesn’t want to change his appearance to please other people. He has launched a successful campaign entitled “Just Ask”, and that’s just what Wikinews did in a video-interview.

The interview was prepared by Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent with the help of Bertalan Meskó (who has a popular genetics and web 2.0 blog). Their questions were sent to a close friend of Mr. Bibbs, Lou Congelio, who kindly conducted the interview.
