A Yellow Cab In Hawthorne And Finding The Right Woman

Posted: June 7th, 2020 by Admin

byAlma Abell

What is your dating life like? Do you wish you could find a woman that did not have to use makeup like it was war paint and who enjoyed being outdoors. Perhaps, you love to spend your weekends on your boat, and you simply want to find a woman who can toss her long hair in a pony tail and leave the house at a moment’s notice. If that is the case, you may belong to a dating site. Further, you may have found pictures of women that look desirable, but when you meet them they were afraid of worms, the smell of fish, and they had big hair and wore too much makeup. If so, you know that is not what you are looking for. However, you may be stuck taking them back home after the date. For this reason, you need to have a better dating plan. For example, if you called a Yellow Cab in Hawthorne, you could send any date that you did not want to proceed with home in a cab.

Did you know when you picked your last date up that she would have big orange hair like a clown? Were you surprised to hear how much she had invested in cosmetic surgery as she winked at you and lost one of her fake eyelashes in her soup? You may have been able to overcome some of the attraction problem when she first opened the door and in the car ride to the restaurant. However, when she lost one of her fake eyelashes and then picked the knife up off the table to see her reflection as she applied even more lipstick, you probably figured out there was no hope. It was at that time that you should have told her how you felt. You did not need to be insulting about it. You could have simply stated you preferred women that were bland looking. Next, you could have called a Yellow Cab in Hawthorne to pick her up.

So, the next time you date someone from your dating site, you need to have a plan. You will call a Yellow Cab in Hawthorne. Next, you will give her money for the Taxi Service. It is the best way to move on.

Wikinews interviews Spanish shooter Paulo Fontán

Posted: June 6th, 2020 by Admin

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

This week, Wikinews interviewed Spanish Paralympic sport shooter Paulo Fontán Torreiro. Late last month, Galician Fontán competed at the Alicante hosted 2013 IPC European Shooting Championship, where he finished twenty-third in the R4 10-meter air rifle standing event, and fortieth in the R5 10-meter air rifle prone event.

((Wikinews)) : So you competed at the IPC European Shooting Championships last month? How did you do? Are you happy with the result?

Paulo Fontán Torreiro: Yes, I competed in the European Championship in Alicante. It was my first important event and I felt very nervous, I wanted to perform well. Despite improving my previous scores and achieving the minimum qualifying score for next year’s World Championship, I think I could have done better.

((WN)) : What do you think you need to improve to possibly compete at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and get a medal?

Paulo Fontán: Basically I would need to be able to train more constantly, obtain financial resources to participate in international events, and have a bit of luck on the day of the competition.

((WN)) : What are the biggest challenges you face on the road to the Rio Games? Money? Good competition? The support network to travel and compete at the highest level? Disability access at training venues?

Paulo Fontán: All that are included in the questions. In order to train effectively, you need adequate facilities, and that’s not the norm here. And to increase my level, I would need to compete against good rivals, basically at international events. For that, I require money and support, something that’s not too available.

((WN)) : Why did you chose to compete in shooting? Why not compete in another sport?

Paulo Fontán: I first tried other sports but finally focused on shooting because it fits my capabilities better, I’m not bad at it, and there is a very agreeable atmosphere at the competitions.

((WN)) : Who are your role models in shooting? Are there any shooters you particularly admire?

Paulo Fontán: I must thank the support Juan Saavedra has given me since I started, and which he keeps giving me when I need it. I would like to mention Marciano Vázquez, the Spanish national team coach, too for his advice and trust in me when he called me up for the European Championship: I hope to return his trust with some future triumph.

((WN)) : What is the sport shooting culture like in Spain? Are people generally supportive when you tell them what sport you compete in?

Paulo Fontán: I don’t think it’s very well known, and there could be some rejection because of the “pegar tiros” part, but that’s out of ignorance since it is mainly a mental sport, a sport requiring focus.

((WN)) : Do you think the classification system in shooting is fair? Do you think it should be changed?

Paulo Fontán: I’ve only been doing this for three years and haven’t had time to analyze it deeply so as to have an opinion about it.

((WN)) : Would you recommend the sport to other people with disabilities? What are reasons they should or should not take up the sport?

Paulo Fontán: Yes, I would recommend it, and I would because it is a sport which can be practiced by a wide array of different disabilities, and for a long time. The biggest problem is the high initial investment, the lack of adequate facilities or the cost of travelling to competitions since there are not many places that allow people with disabilities to participate.

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Buffalo, New York —A proposed hotel that was supposed to be built at the corner of Elmwood and Forest Avenues in Buffalo, New York is apparently off the table. The former proposal was going to be called The Elmwood Village Hotel and would have consisted of 72 rooms and cost between $7 to $10 million American dollars to build.

Today several unknown individuals were seen removing a sign that was dedicated to the “Elmwood Village Gateway,” which signifies the beginning of the Elmwood Village at the formerly proposed project’s location.

Nearly an hour later the men replaced the sign with a different and unexpected sign: “For Sale: 5 commercial parcels and 1 carriage house, By: Owner.” Those 5 “parcels” are 1109-1121 Elmwood and 999 Forest Avenue, which is located in an illegal alley, according to the City of Buffalo, behind the 5 other properties on Elmwood. Hans Mobius owns all properties named in the sale.

Sam Savarino, CEO of Savarino Companies never owned the properties and has repeatadly told Wikinews in exclusive interviews that he still had a “contract to buy the properties” and on October 2, 2006 told Wikinews in an exclusive interview that he “extended” the “agreement to purchase the property[s] and will have it under contract for what we hope is a sufficient period of time.”

“He [Mobius] is undoubtedly concerned because he has lost some tenants and is a bit impatient. I think he has properly portrayed the situation,” said Savarino in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

Savarino also says that there may be “legal issues” to work out now, before anything else can move forward, regarding the proposal.

“There are some legal complexities that must be sorted out before anything can happen there,” added Savarino.

The welcome sign was; however, not removed entirely. The sign was placed, facing the same direction of north, on the side of the Forest Plaza Art Gallery, a new art gallery located on the corner of Forest and Elmwood.

Nancy Pollina, owner of Don Apparel which was located at 1109 Elmwood, but closed on October 14, 2006 considers this a possible “victory” in regards to the lawsuit filed against the hotel to stop it from being built, alleging that several laws were broken, including not performing an Environmental Impact Study before the proposal was approved by the city, during its approval and the proposal was “rushed.” Patricia Morris, who operates Don Apparel with Pollina, Angeline Genovese and Evelyn Bencinich, owners of residences on Granger Place which abut the rear of the proposed site, Nina Freudenheim, a resident of nearby Penhurst Park, and Sandra Girage, the owner of a two-family residence on Forest Avenue less than a hundred feet from the proposed hotel’s sole entrance and exit driveway, were also plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They filed the suit with a lawyer representing them, Arthur J. Giacalone, on April 25, 2006 in New York State Supreme Court, but the case has never gone to a courtroom.

Giacalone believes that a press release issued in July regarding the project was nothing but a statement to “save face,” but that the placement of the for sale sign might be a way of convincing Savarino to speed up the sale of the properties.

“I thought all along that Savarino’s July press release might be no more than an effort to save face. But we have no way of knowing. Similarly, Mobius might have put the for-sale sign up in an attempt to pressure Savarino into closing the deal. There’s no way to tell,” said Giacalone in an exclusive interview with Wikinews.

In regards to the lawsuit, Giacalone thinks it may now be in “limbo.”

“The lawsuit still sits in limbo,” added Giacalone.

Building partially collapses in New York City’s Upper West Side

Posted: June 5th, 2020 by Admin

Thursday, July 14, 2005

A building being prepared for demolition collapsed this morning in New York‘s Upper West Side around 9 a.m. EDT. Five people are known to be injured from the accident, as well as one rescue worker who was injured in the aftermath. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The building was a supermarket, which was being taken down to make room for a high-rise building, something that residents took issue with. The roof, front wall, and scaffolding all fell to the ground, as stated by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

Soon after the incident at least 100 police and fire department personnel combed the wreckage for more victims, using search and rescue dogs to find people by scent. They quickly accounted for the twenty-five construction workers who were working on the supermarket. Most of the victims’ injuries were broken bones, including one person who broke all four extremities.

Subway lines 1, 2, and 3 have been closed or redirected in response, along with the M104 bus.

Las Vegas For Kids Top Things To Do With Kids In Vegas

Posted: June 5th, 2020 by Admin

By Diana Washington

While there has been a big push in recent years toward luring an adult crowd to the Sin City, Las Vegas can still be a great place to visit with kids, if you do some planning in advance. This Vegas travel guide highlights some of the top things to do with kids in Las Vegas.

Kids Love the Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix Center

For an exciting time of rides and arcade games, the Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix Center can’t be beat. You buy tickets depending on how many rides you want to go on, and then for each ride you hand over the relevant number of tickets – some of them cost a full ticket, others cost less! This is great if you’re on a tight budget for your Vegas family vacation. There are size restrictions for riding on some things alone, so if your little one is under the permitted height, they go free as long as you go with them. There’s also arcade games, and of course a number of different grand prix based rides. There are few kids, even teens, who won’t have a blast trying to outrace dad on the Go Kart Road Race!

The Las Vegas Natural History Museum: a Dinosaur-lovers Dream

For kids who love dinosaurs, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum is another great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Not only can your kids learn about different natural environments, they can have fun in the interactive room where they can take part in fossil digging, learn about animal tracks, as well as coming face to face with the 35ft long T-Rex. The Las Vegas Natural History Museum also offers special programs such as field trips and weekend science events, so be sure to check out their website before leaving home if your child is fascinated by nature and science.

The Lied Discovery Children’s Museum

One museum that has awards for being one of the best that Vegas has to offer is the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum. The museum has a fascinating display of exhibits where your kids can get hands-on fun with such things as fixing a car. Younger kids will love the toddler water table – so be sure to bring some extra clothes to change as they’re bound to get wet! This museum is all about teaching about arts and science in such a fun way that your kids won’t even realize that they’re learning anything – but when these same subjects are introduced in the classroom back at school, they’ll remember what they did on the Las Vegas family vacation and will be able to apply their knowledge to their studies.

More Great Things to Do with Kids in Vegas

Don’t forget to do the rounds of the more famous Vegas hotels on the strip. There are plenty of great things to do with kids at Circus Circus, for example, such as see the circus acts or go the Adventuredome, so you don’t have to move far off the strip to give your kids a great time.

Sub-prime lenders send jitters through global markets

Sub-prime lenders send jitters through global markets

Posted: June 4th, 2020 by Admin

Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Just two weeks after China sent global markets into a tumble, growing worries about sub-prime mortgage lenders in the United States are sending jitters through stock exchanges around the globe. The three major US stock market indices each fell two percent from Monday’s closing price, marking the second-biggest loss of 2007. London’s FTSE 100, Paris’ CAC 40 and Frankfurt’s DAX 30 indices each closed down more than 1 percent.

As the Mortgage Bankers Association reported that late payments on mortgages and home foreclosures in the US homes rose in the fourth quarter to their highest level in years, investors are concerned that not only US banks but also multi-national banks around the globe could have exposure.

More than two dozen sub-prime lenders have closed or sold operations as defaults on those mortgages have risen. “The delinquencies and defaults have started to soar,” said Nicolas Retsinas, director of Housing Studies at Harvard University. “A lot of these lenders started to make loans and lost track of some of the fundamentals.”

New Century Financial Corporation, the second largest sub-prime lender in the US, has recently revealed that its creditors were no longer providing funds and, further, it has become subject of an SEC investigation. The New York Stock Exchange has said it will delist New Century. Accredited Home Loan Lending, another major sub-prime mortgage specialist, said it was seeking fresh capital and waivers on its lending covenants.

Sub-prime lenders provide mortgages to people who do not qualify for loans from mainstream lenders, typically due to their credit histories. The lenders then bundle these mortgages as collateral for loans that they obtain from other financing firms, such as GMAC. Such firms can then repackage these loans and sell them as mortgage-backed securities. These securities may end up in the hands of major multi-national banks such as Citibank, HSBC, and Commerzbank. Each level of lending assumes a level of financial risk, but trouble can arise when the risk tolerances are exceeded. If too many homeowners default on their mortgages, the sub-prime lender can end up defaulting. If too many of these lenders default, as it is feared may be happening now, the defaults can cascade upward. While no one is predicting major bank failures at this point, it is feared that their profits could be hurt.

Poll of 100 million votes names new Seven Wonders of the World

Poll of 100 million votes names new Seven Wonders of the World

Posted: June 4th, 2020 by Admin

Sunday, July 8, 2007

In 1999, Bernard Weber started the New7Wonders foundation, and eight years, 200 candidates and 100 million votes later, seven man-made structures now have something in common – they all hold the title of ‘Wonder’. Weber claims he started the foundation to ensure that “everybody can decide what the new seven wonders should be and not some government, not some individuals, not some institutions.”

Nominated structures had to be built or discovered before the year 2000, and out of the 200 nominations, only twenty-one were left by the early part of last year. Voting had been taking place for six months, but only recently did voting result in server crashes, causing the foundation to encourage text message voting.

The results were announced at a ceremony hosted by Hilary Swank, Ben Kingsley and Bollywood star Bipasha Basu in Lisbon, Portugal. Out of the twenty-one, the following seven were announced as the new ‘Wonders of the World’:

 • Great Wall of China, in northern China. It was created in the 5th century BC to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. The Wall is the world’s longest human-made structure, stretching over 6,400 km (4,000 mi).
 • Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The giant statue of Jesus Christ is 38 m (105 ft) tall and weighs 700 tonnes. The statue is located at the peak of the 700 m (2296 ft) Corcovado mountain, overlooking the city of Rio.
 • Machu Picchu, above the Urubamba Valley, Peru. It is a city created by the Inca Empire, located on a mountain ridge. Machu Picchu was forgotten for centuries by the outside world, however not by the locals. It was brought to international attention by archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911.
 • Petra, in Jordan. It is famous for having many giant stone structures carved into the rock. The site was revealed to the Western world by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812, but remained accessible only to Europeans until after World War I.
 • Chichen Itza, on the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. It is a large archaeological site originally built by the Maya civilization. Chichen Itza was a major regional center in the northern Maya lowlands. Archaeological data suggest that Chichen Itza’s collapse was violent.
 • Taj Mahal, in Agra, India. It is a white marble mausoleum generally considered the finest example of Mughal architecture. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned it for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and it was constructed between 1632 and 1648.
 • Colosseum, in Rome, Italy. It is a giant amphitheatre located in the centre of the city, and was capable of seating around 50,000 spectators. It was constructed between 70 AD and 80 AD, and used for nearly 500 years for a variety of events.

Although the foundation had large amounts of public support, UNESCO, the United Nations cultural program, distanced themselves from the project, saying it had “no link whatsoever” to the project. UNESCO currently keeps tabs on 851 places in its ‘World Heritage Sites‘ program.

Left out of the Seven are the Pyramids of Giza, to which a respected Egyptian antiquities expert replied that the pyramids are a “symbol of the genius of the ancient people.” The foundation announced that the pyramids would have “honorary status” with the seven. The pyramids were the only remaining of the original Seven Wonders.

Weber claims that now that the man-made wonders have been chosen he has a new task: choosing the seven natural wonders of the world. He says he will start his new project immediately.

Computer Office Desks: Purchasing First Class Computer Desks For Your Work Area

Posted: June 1st, 2020 by Admin

By Trevor Price

Many of us spend so much time focusing on finding the best ergonomic task chair, but never seem to stop to consider our computer office desks – which are half the equation. Before you buy your next computer desk, read on for what to look for in a quality desk and suggestions on some of the better ergonomic desk solutions available today.

Cable Storage

If you own a computer, you know that all the wires and cables running from your peripherals to the actual computer can be a major eyesore, disorganized mess, and walking hazard. Good computer office desks provide a solution for this – a few holes in the back of the desk that are designed for weaving cables through, to direct them back and up through the desk rather than scattered across your work surface. So, avoid a tangle of wires and look for a desk with pre-designed cabling solutions.

Tuck it Away

Rather than having your desktop tower, CDs, printers and other peripheral devices all out in the open and cluttering your workspace, seek a computer desk that has the storage capacity to tuck it all away. While an open-concept desk may seem like a good idea, you’ll soon find your work surface overrun with wiring, papers, files and print cartridges. To keep a clean desk, look for a desk with specific computer and file storage drawers or cabinets.

Posture Perfect

The most important factor when purchasing a new computer desk is to make sure that it properly fits for your planned usage. To be ergonomically correct, you should be able to sit at the desk with your feet flat on the floor and reach the work surface area comfortable. If you like to occasionally cross your legs (which you shouldn’t do), make sure you have room to do so. Plan ahead and bring your ideal desk measurements with you before you go shopping.

Desks That Fit the Bill

The “Sit to Stand Desk” – Made by Relax the Back

The Sit to Stand Desk is expensive (almost $1700), but may be well worth it for those suffering from back pain caused by hunching over their desks all day. This desk has a built-in motor and easy controls that allow you to raise or lower it from 25 to 52 inches – making it great for shorter individuals who want to sit or very tall individuals who prefer to stand. By standing for part of your workday, you take stress off your back and alleviate those painful work muscles. This desk also comes with cable passes and optional storage cabinets.

Airtouch – Made by Steelcase

The Airtouch is another of the computer office desks designed as a light workstation solution that’s height adjustable. However, it lacks storage, making it either a great desk for a laptop user or someone willing to invest in additional storage. The desk is reasonably priced, well-designed and is also certified for indoor air quality – that means the glues and materials used in its construction are carcinogen-free.

It’s a GLAM wrap: Curators meet collaborators at Canberra conference

It’s a GLAM wrap: Curators meet collaborators at Canberra conference

Posted: June 1st, 2020 by Admin

Monday, August 17, 2009

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Earlier this month, over 150 delegates from cultural institutions, government and the online community gathered at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra over one and a half days for the first GLAM-WIKI conference. The conference brought together representatives from the GLAM sector, comprising galleries, libraries, archives and museums, politicians, and members of the Wikimedia community (who edit the online encyclopedia Wikipedia and its sister sites), to enter into a dialogue regarding ways the three areas can work collaboratively to preserve and promote cultural collections online.

Highlights from the conference included keynote speeches by Wikimedia Foundation Chief Program Officer Jennifer Riggs and Senator Kate Lundy, as well as a panel discussion on the political pressures involved in improving and disseminating GLAM organisations’ online collections featuring Senator Lundy as well as Senator Scott Ludlam, ACT Legislative Assembly shadow minister Alistair Coe, Government 2.0 Taskforce member Seb Chan, Adjunct Director to the Digital Library of the National Library of New Zealand Paul Reynolds and Kylie Johnson, the New Media Advisor for the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts. Sessions focused on ways the Wikimedia and GLAM communities could better work together to further their missions of preserving, curating and sharing cultural knowledge, with streams examining the topics of legal and technical barriers, and the impact on business and education.

Two case studies were presented at the conference, the first being the Powerhouse Museum’s experimental release of some of their photographic collection to Flickr Commons, and the second the collaboration between the German Wikimedia chapter and German Federal Archives to release their collection to Wikimedia Commons. While these and other projects were examined as successful forays into open content, the recent legal action between the United Kingdom’s National Portrait Gallery and a Wikimedian was raised in most sessions as an example of such efforts having negative consequences.

Delegates at the conference engaged in heated discussion both on- and offline, with the #GLAM-WIKI tag on Twitter generating over 500 tweets during the course of the first day. Overall, feedback from participants was strongly positive over both the event and its plans for the future.

Liam Wyatt, the Vice President of the Australian Wikimedia Chapter and organiser of the event, was impressed by the turnout. According to Wyatt, “at 170 registrations it is one of the largest Wikimedia events ever, after [international Wikimedia conference] Wikimania, and to be able to offer that for no attendance fee is testament to the support we received from our partners – most especially the WMF … There are many proposals and discussions that are now starting up as a result of the event and, rightly, these may take quite some time to bear fruit. However, what I think we have achieved immediately is to take the heat out of the debate between the cultural sector and the Wikimedia community.”

Jennifer Riggs was similarly impressed by the dialogue that came as a result of the conference. “It’s gone terrifically, really. People have had the opportunity to be really frank about the concerns that they have.”

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Hurricane Dean hit the coast of Mexico’s mainland today as a Category 2 hurricane, with winds sustained at 100 mph.

Dean moved across the Bay of Campeche, eyeing over 100 oil platforms and several oil ports in the center of the country’s oil industry. Over 14,000 workers in the area had to be evacuated.

The eye of the storm hit Tecolutla, a major tourist town. Over 10,000 people were evacuated.

Currently, there are no reports of deaths or serious injuries following the landfall in Mexico. However, the storm caused major damage to some areas with very heavy rains shutting down many roadways and flooding many homes.

Overall Dean is being blamed for at least 20 deaths in the Caribbean.

The storm has since been downgraded to Category 1 status.
