This is usually a win-win situation because your blog visitors would be happy to have read from an authority in the industry while you will be having real fun discussing what you know best and also be making money from the sales of the cake recipe you created.

Owner and manager of Moroccan factory arrested over 55-fatality fire

Police have arrested the owner of a mattress factory in Hay Hassini, Casablanca, Morocco which burned down in a disaster that claimed 55 lives. His son, who was the factory’s manager, was also arrested.

Those killed — 35 of whom were women — were trapped inside by locked fire exits, which were barricaded to stop theft during working hours. “The people who died were either asphyxiated or burned,” commented a firefighter. 17 were wounded. Moustapha Taouil of the Casablanca civil protection service said the blaze was triggered by an inadequatly maintained electric saw on the ground floor. The initial fire quickly engulfed all four storeys of the building.

The Rosamor factory was clearly operating unsafely, officials said. “It’s a building with a ground floor and three upper floors specialising in making furniture, therefore there were highly inflammable products,” said Taouil. “We confirmed during our examination that the owners of the premises failed to respect legal requirements for this kind of industry including staff training… the owner in contravention of the law, locked staff inside the plant apparently to prevent theft of raw material. It was this that prevented them getting out. The fire was caused by lack of proper maintenance of certain machines and electrical installations.” He said a short circuit on the ground floor, which was filled with power saws, triggered the disaster.

As a result of the investigatons, “The plant’s owner, Adil Moufarreh, and his son Abdelali Moufarreh, who was the manager, have been taken into custody after having been questioned by police,” said an official.

28-year-old factory employee Fadila Khadija said “There was no emergency exit, the extinguishers were empty and the working conditions were difficult.” One source said that windows were also unusable as they were covered with iron bars. 20-year-old survivor Omar Elaaz said “I was working on the first floor as an upholsterer. The smoke came up from the ground floor where the foam rubber, wood and glue are stored. I used a gas bottle to break the wire mesh that protects every window.” 31-year-old upholsterer Hakim Hakki told of his own lucky escape and its effect on him from hospital: “I jumped from the third floor with four other colleagues while the women, who didn’t dare to follow us, perished in the inferno. God saved me but I’ll never forget those who died.”

The father of deceased 19-year-old Abdelazziz Darif said his son was paid 250 dirhams (20 euro/31 US dollars) per week and did not have social insurance.

Scott Brown wins special election for Massachusetts’s Senate seat in upset victory

Scott Brown wins special election for Massachusetts’s Senate seat in upset victory

Posted: June 21st, 2020 by Admin

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Republican State Senator Scott Brown has won the Massachusetts United States Senate seat formerly held by the late Ted Kennedy in a major upset victory, becoming the first Republican that state has elected in 38 years. The state senator from Wrentham beat Massachusetts’s Attorney General, Martha Coakley, in a closely watched race that many believe may have a nationwide impact.

With higher than expected turnout — despite snow and rain blanketing much of the state — Brown won with 51.9% of the vote, as Coakley lagged behind closely with 47.1% of the vote in a state generally considered to be heavily Democratic. The race garnered national attention when Brown came from behind in opinion polls to take a last-minute lead, leaving Democrats scrambling. Meanwhile, Independent Libertarian Joseph L. Kennedy, who has no relation to the late Senator Kennedy, ran under the Liberty ticket on the ballot and only garnered one percent of the vote with 22,237 votes.

Secretary of the Commonwealth William F. Galvin predicted earlier in the day that turnout would be 40 to 55 percent. Galvin was quote as saying, “We’ve been in touch with many of our city and town clerks to monitor turnout. They uniformly tell us that turnout is brisk, that interest is strong.”

Galvin added, “We’re particularly seeing a high level of interest in some of the suburban communities. Traditionally cities tend to vote somewhat later. But we have seen a number of communities (with) lines, and people standing in lines, very patiently, in the snow.” His office sent out 105,000 absentee ballots.

Brown’s strongest vote came from the suburbs of Boston where independent voters, which make up a majority in Massachusetts, generally live.

Coakley’s strongest vote came from the cities, including the capital, Boston, where she won by a large margin, along with Massachusetts’ second and third largest cities, Worcester and Springfield. Other large cities that went for Coakley included New Bedford, Fall River, Brockton, Lynn, Salem, and Lawrence.

Wikinews reporter Patrick Mannion noted the turnout at his polling place in Lynn was small to moderate.

Brown has promised to be the 41st Republican senator that will end the Democrats’ filibuster proof supermajority and in a ironic twist of fate possibly end health-care reform of which his predecessor Ted Kennedy called “the cause of my life.”

I’ll bet they can hear all this cheering down in Washington, D.C. And I hope they’re paying close attention, because tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken. … I’m Scott Brown. I’m from Wrentham. I drive a truck, and I am nobody’s senator but yours.

Coakley called Brown shortly before the election was called for him to concede to him. She then went in front of supporters at Boston’s Sheraton Hotel saying, “Although our campaign ends tonight, we know that our mission continues and our work goes on.” Coakley continued, “I am heartbroken at the result and I know that you are also, but I know that you will get up together and continue this fight even with this result tonight.”

Coakley finished her speech with a slight crack in her voice by quoting Ted Kennedy’s famous line from the 1980 Democratic National Convention, “The work begins anew, the hope rises again, and the dream lives on.”

Meanwhile, at Boston’s Park Plaza Hotel, Brown gave his victory speech to supporters saying, “I’ll bet they can hear all this cheering down in Washington, D.C.” Brown continued, saying, “And I hope they’re paying close attention, because tonight the independent voice of Massachusetts has spoken.”

Brown added, “This Senate seat belongs to no one person and no political party — and as I have said before, and you said loud and clear today, it is the people’s seat.” He continued, “The people, by their votes, have now filled the office themselves, and I am ready to go to Washington without delay.”

Brown was joined on stage by his wife, Gail Huff, a reporter for local television station WCVB-TV, and his two daughters Arianna and Ayla Brown. Ayla was previously a contestant on the reality singing show American Idol. Brown said, “I rely as always, on Gail’s love and support and that of our beautiful daughters.”

Brown jokingly added, “And just in case anyone who’s watching throughout the country they’re both available. No, no. No. Only kidding, only kidding. Only kidding, only kidding. Arianna… Arianna’s, definitely not available. But Ayla is. This is Arianna. This is Ayla. I can see I’m going to get in trouble when I get home.”

Brown closed by saying, “I’m Scott Brown. I’m from Wrentham. I drive a truck, and I am nobody’s senator but yours.”

President Barack Obama phoned both candidates Tuesday night, congratulating Brown on a well-run campaign and saying he is eager to work with him on the urgent problems facing Massachusetts voters and all Americans.

Coakley noted the President’s call in her concession speech saying, “He actually just called me before I came onstage to say that we can’t win them all, and he knows that better than any, as he told me. But he appreciates what I did and what you did, and he said to extend his heartfelt thanks to everyone who worked on the campaign.”

Brown’s response to the President’s call was, “Would you like me to drive the truck down to Washington so you can see it?” Brown was referring to his 2005 GMC Canyon pickup truck which became an icon of his campaign, which featured in commericals portraying him as an everyday, regular joe Massachusetts citizen. The pickup truck was mocked by President Obama when he made a campaign stop on Sunday to drum up support for the lagging Coakley.

This led Brown to quip, “I didn’t mind when President Obama came here and criticized me — that happens in campaigns. But when he criticized my truck, that’s where I draw the line.”

Senator-elect Brown will fill the remaining two years of Ted Kennedy’s term. Brown will replace Senator Paul Kirk, a longtime friend of Ted Kennedy who was holding the seat in the interim until the special election was concluded.

The last time Massachusetts elected a Republican was in 1972 when they re-elected Edward Brooke, the state’s first African-American senator, to a second term. Brooke first ran in 1966 and was elected then.

However, the seat that Ted Kennedy held, which is the Class 1 seat, was held by a Republican until 1952 when Henry Cabot Lodge lost his re-election bid to Ted’s older brother, John F. Kennedy, who would later become the 35th President of the United States. Ted Kennedy won the seat in a special election in 1962 against Lodge’s son, George C. Lodge. Kennedy held the seat for 46 years until dying of brain cancer in August 2009.

Wikinews interviews Fred Karger, U.S. Republican Party presidential candidate

Posted: June 20th, 2020 by Admin

Saturday, April 28, 2012

United States political consultant and gay rights (LGBT) activist Fred Karger of California took some time to discuss his Republican Party presidential campaign with Wikinews reporter William Saturn. Karger holds the distinction as the first openly gay person to seek the presidential nomination of a major U.S. political party.

Before entering electoral politics, Karger worked as an adviser for such prominent Republicans and former U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Since retiring as an adviser in 2004, he has been involved in LGBT issues: opposing California Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in the state; and leading investigations of such same-sex marriage opponents as the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) and the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormon Church).

In 2010, Karger first announced his intentions to seek the Republican presidential nomination, but did not officially announce until March 2011. One of his early campaign goals was to participate in a GOP presidential debate, but was never invited due to polling thresholds. However, Karger argued that he did meet the requirement for an August debate, but was still excluded after the organizers deemed polls he cited as inadequate.

So far, Karger has appeared on four Republican primary ballots including Puerto Rico, where he was able to top Congressman Ron Paul, who, at the time was one of the four major candidates in the race. Karger will next appear on the ballots in California on June 5, and in Utah on June 26.

Karger brands himself as “a different kind of Republican” that wants to open the party to outsiders. He backs gay marriage, is pro-choice on abortion, and wants to lower the voting age. However, he also holds some traditional Republican views: he favors a strengthening of the private sector and believes the U.S. should be steadfast in its support for the nation of Israel.

In talking to Wikinews, Karger discusses his personal political background and activism, the 2012 presidential election and his GOP campaign, as well as his political views on both domestic and foreign affairs.

3 Habits Of A Proficient And Prolific Writer}

Posted: June 19th, 2020 by Admin

Literature is also an art, for it can be learned. It can be demonstrated not only by the gifted few but also by those who have acquired such literary skills. As the saying goes, Geniuses are born; scholars are made. Therefore, everyone can avail of the literary skills and become a littrateur.Rainald C. Paggao, ‘Of Stories and Poems’ (1992)

=====

A friend of minewho loves writingrecently wrote to me, asking for advice on how to improve her literary skills and if I know some secrets in achieving proficiency and prolificness in writing. She also asked if I might, perhaps, be altruistic enough to share with her the secrets in case I knew them. Staring at her letter, I paused and then pondered smilingly; and before the train of thoughts that choo-chooed in my mind disappeared, I took my quill and a sheet of parchment, dipped the quill into the bottle of ink, and, across the parchments smooth surface, began to slide my cursive hand

Dear Melchie,

Everyone can avail of the literary skills and become a littrateur. However, to become a literary writer, there are works to be done and bittersweet pains to be experienced. Of course, anyone who is literate can begin to write; but unless she learns certain principles, she can never reach her full potential as a writer; for without following such rudiments, she will soon run out of words with which to express her ideas and, worse, she will run out of ideas to write about. She then ceases to be what she had aspired to becomea littrateur.

So, how can you improve your literary skills? How will you develop proficiency and prolificacy in writing? I encapsulate my answer into three secretswrite, read, and study. Simple, you might think, but honing these skills involves self-discipline. What then if, for whatever reason, you simply could not compel yourself into living these habits?

Easy! Forget about becoming a writer. Anyway, there are many other avocations in which you can indulge.

=====

WRITE

=====

Obviously, this should be the first step in becoming a writer; and what I mean is, you make writing down notes a habit; so, wherever you go, you should always have with you a pen and a small notebook, or better yet, a journal. Compel yourself to write frequently and regularlyevery morning upon waking up, every break time at your work, every night before sleeping. This is the beginning of prolificity. Write about anything at allexperiences, delights, woeswhatever that pops up in your mind; and regardless if its only a couple of sentences, a phrase, or a word, write it down. Unless you put it on paper, you will never know if a doodle can elongate into a noodle of stories. Dont trust your memory. Its not flawless. This was the reason stylus and parchment were inventedso people could document what might otherwise be lost in the webbeddest corners of their minds. And usually, spur-of-the-moment ideas are the most potent. Even the greatest authors in the annals of Literature owed much to the initially incomprehensible jumble of words that they scribbled in their journals in rare moments of inspiration. In fact, the first sentence of one of the most popular novels in the world’The Hobbit’In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit, was just a scribble its author, J.R.R. Tolkien, had mindlessly written on a blank sheet of paper during an unexciting day upon seeing a hole in the carpet in his study. You can now imagine how a small hole in a carpet had grown into something gigantic as ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and Middle-earth itself.

====

READ

====

I can never imagine writing without reading. Can you? I mean, just as women were born to complete men and vice versa, writing and reading exist to complement each other. Remember: the topics good writers write about do not only originate from what they hear and observe; they usually come from the

amalgamation of everything they read. So, you, as a writer, can greatly expand your bag of ideas by reading a lotencyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, pocketbooks, any form of publications at all. And do not limit yourself with a particular genre or with the subjects of your interest. Not because you fancy fantasy fiction that you will read only publications dealing with dwarves, elves, castles, and swords; not because you are romantic and lovesick that you will dwell on only romance pocketbooks; and not because we are already living in the Internet age that you will forget the literary classics. Be an eclectic reader. Read the best books in every genre. This is the best way to become a proficient writer. It broadens your knowledge and perspective, it diversifies your taste, and, most especially, it enables you to discover different styles in writing. An eclectic reader is someone who has reread any of her schoolbooks; has read a childrens book, a Science magazine, an almanac, the appendices of a dictionary, a Web-site article; and is unafraid to try reading something obscure or unusual.

=====

STUDY

=====

You can express your brilliant ideas and write them in as many words and with your most original style as you possibly could; but if you have a poor command of the written language, whats the point? You mock the very essence of being a writerfor, above all prerequisites, a writer should be a master of grammar and letters. It is insufficient that you are able to express on paper whats in your mind; you must be also capable of writing them precisely and in a grammatically correct fashion. Therefore, it is paramount that you own, aside from a dictionary and a thesaurus, a grammar book and a manual of style. For as long as you are writing, you must never cease to learn and studyand update yourself onthe rudiments in writing the continuously evolving language. /(C)2004 eLf ideas

Utah police investigate polygamist family from reality show ‘Sister Wives’

Posted: June 19th, 2020 by Admin

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The polygamist family at the center of the new TLC reality television series Sister Wives are now the subject of a criminal investigation. Yesterday, following Sunday’s debut of Sister Wives, police in Lehi, Utah, where the show is set, announced they are investigating Kody Brown and his four wives for possible charges of bigamy.

Sister Wives focuses on Brown, his four wives—Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn—and his 13 children and three step-children. The family has said they are participating in the show to bring more public awareness to polygamist families and fight societal prejudices.

Brown has claimed the arrangement is not illegal because he is only legally married to Meri, and the other marriages are only spiritual unions. However, Lehi police said yesterday that state laws identify bigamy through cohabitation, not just legal contracts. The department plans to turn their findings over to the Utah Attorney General’s office at the conclusion of their investigation.

TLC contacted the state attorney general’s office before the series was broadcast in anticipation of potential legal issues. The office has not explicitly stated they will not charge the Browns, but has stated they do not have the resources to prosecute polygamists unless they are suspected of serious crimes, like child abuse and child trafficking.

Polls held for US state and local elections, with incomplete GOP success

Posted: June 18th, 2020 by Admin

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Voters went to the polls on Tuesday for several US state elections seen by some as a referendum on the policies of President Barack Obama one year after his election (and by others as a purely local election). A few key races in the elections are in states the president carried last year.

In Virginia, results indicated that Republican candidate Bob McDonnell won over Democrat Creigh Deeds in the governor’s race. Polls suggested that many independent voters in the state who last year voted for Obama supported McDonnell.

Another race being closely watched was in New Jersey, normally a safe Democratic area. The New Jersey State Assembly remained Democratic, but the Republican challenger won the governorship. Democratic Governor Jon Corzine was competing with Republican challenger Chris Christie.

Obama has campaigned for both Democratic candidates, trying to avoid a result that Republicans would interpret as a rejection of his policies on the economy, health care and other issues.

Political analysts say Republican victories in both New Jersey and Virginia would energize the Obama administration’s opponents and set up a major battle for control of Congress in the 2010 midterm elections.

Elsewhere in the country, a closely watched special congressional election in upstate New York has exposed tensions between moderates and conservatives within the Republican party. A Democrat apparently won that seat, which the Republican candidate supported after retiring from the race.

In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to easily win a third term in office. (He won, but by a closer margin than expected.) Mayoral races also are on the ballot in the cities of Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Detroit and Pittsburgh.

In a number of states, the public will vote on controversial issues such as legalized gambling, same-sex marriage (which lost) and allowing marijuana use for medical reasons (which won).

Your Audiology Fort Myers Specialist Can Help Improve Your Hearing

Posted: June 17th, 2020 by Admin

byadmin

The audiology Fort Myers specialists are there to help people that are having hearing loss. The most often heard complaint is that people sound like they are mumbling. On occasion people will tell them that the people in their home complain that they are constantly turning the radio or TV louder and louder.

When they finally decide to make an appointment with their doctor to get their hearing tested, they are often referred to an audiology specialist. Audiology is the scientist that deals with hearing challenges. Aside from just noticing a loss of hearing, patients will complain of problems with their balance. This can be the result of having a hearing problem with only one ear, or it could be the result of having an inner ear infection.

Audiology Fort Myers doctors use a variety of testing techniques, such as standard hearing tests, videonystagmography, atoacoustic emissions measurements and eletrophysilogic tests that helps to determine if someone is hearing within the normal range of human hearing. If they aren’t, these tests will determine if the portion of hearing affected is in the low, middle or high frequencies and just how much of a problem they actually have.

Once it is determined that a vestibule abnormality or hearing loss is present, the Audiology specialist will sit down and explain what options the patient has available. These options could include cochlear implants, surgery or hearing aids. It may also be necessary to make a referral to another kind of doctor.

When the use of hearing aids is indicated, the patient will need to be fitted to ensure that they get just the right kind and size. In the past, patients only had the option of having big and very obvious hearing aids. With the improvements in technology, hearing aids of today are much smaller, even with the tiny batteries that are included. So small are many of the hearing aids of today that very often people can’t even tell that someone is wearing them. In spite of their smaller size, hearing aids of today can cover a much wider range of atoacoustic emissions, which means more people can get the help they need to start hearing much better.

If you find yourself saying”Huh” a lot or turning the sound up on audio equipment, you should make an appointment with your local Audiology Fort Myers doctor as quick as you can.

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

US automaker bailout deal fails to pass Senate

Posted: June 17th, 2020 by Admin

Friday, December 12, 2008

A US$14 billion bailout package deal for the “Big Three” United States automakers — Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors — has been rejected in the United States Senate after failing a procedural vote.

The bill was rejected after bipartisan discussions on the bailout broke down when Republican Party leaders insisted that the United Auto Workers (UAW) union agree to increase wage cuts by next year in order to bring their pay into line with those of Japanese automobile companies in the United States. The UAW refused to meet the demands.

The final vote count in the Senate was 52-35, eight short of the 60 needed to pass. Only ten Republicans joined forty Democrats and two independents in voting for the bill. Three Democrats voted with thirty-one Republicans against it.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid said that he was “terribly disappointed” by the failure of the bill to pass. “I dread looking at Wall Street tomorrow. It’s not going to be a pleasant sight,” Reid said. “Millions of Americans, not only the auto workers but people who sell cars, car dealerships, people who work on cars are going to be directly impacted and affected.”

Republican Senator Bob Corker was also unhappy about the rejection. “We were about three words away from a deal. We solved everything substantively and about three words keep us from reaching a conclusion,” he said.

Some Democrats now want U.S. President Bush to reserve a portion of the $700 billion bailout package earmarked for Wall Street to assist the flagging car industry.

Stock markets worldwide fell dramatically on the news, with Japan’s Nikkei average losing 484.68 points, or 5.6 percent, reaching a level of 8253.87 points. Shares in the auto companies Toyota, Nissan and Honda all dropped by no less than 10 percent apiece. European stocks, such as those in the United Kingdom and Germany, also lost ground, with the FTSE-100 index of leading shares falling 176.3 points to a level of 4,211 at midday.
